Freshman Caryn Rosoff has only played 12 games in a Bear uniform, but because of her performance on Sunday, the rookie has already had a career day.

Rosoff’s hat trick on Sunday propelled the 14th-ranked Bears to a 3-1 win over conference rival Carnegie Mellon University in Pittsburgh.

The Bears’ win, coupled with the University of Chicago’s loss and the University of Rochester’s tie this weekend, gives Wash. U. (10-2, UAA 2-0) sole possession of first place in the University Athletic Association. It also marks the first time WU has started conference play 2-0 since 2000.

Rosoff’s scoring display started in the 10th minute. She gathered a through ball from junior Kim O’Keefe at the 25-yard line and fired a shot to the far side post, beating Tartan goalkeeper Christie Adams. The Bears were 9-0 when they scored first this season.

In the 28th minute Rosoff added her second goal on an assist from junior Marin McCarthy. McCarthy’s pass left Rosoff in a one-on-one with Adams. “It was a breakaway that went in slow-[motion],” said Rosoff.

Carnegie Mellon narrowed the Bears’ lead to 2-1 in the 53rd minute after Kasey Stever intercepted a pass intended for junior Wash. U. goalie Carrie Sear.

Stever touched the ball, which passed a charging Sear and dribbled into the net. This was the first goal Sear has allowed in the Bears’ current eight-game win streak.

Rosoff completed her hat trick in the 62nd minute. Freshman Libby Held delivered a free kick into the box which Rosoff tried to head into the goal. Her header was deflected by Adams, but the rebound bounced to Rosoff, who put it in the net to give the Bears a 3-1 lead.

“[Rosoff] made some great runs today,” said senior co-captain MeghanMarie Fowler-Finn. “People did a good job giving her the ball, and she kept her composure around the net.”

Rosoff’s three goals push her season total for goals to a team-leading nine. The single-season record is 31, which is held by current assistant coach Lori Khazen (who set the record as Lori Thomas).

“Everything’s working really well. I’m having a lot of fun,” added Rosoff.

The Bears continue their road trip next weekend, with games against Case Western Reserve University and the University of Rochester.
