Most Super Bowl fans find themselves flocking to the homes of friends and family, dorms, and apartments to celebrate during the big game. The Super Bowl isn’t for everybody, however, and some people might want to go out on Sunday and do something other than watch football. Given that, there are some great places in St. Louis that can accommodate such people. So where do you go? What do you do?
Dressel’s Pub (Central West End)
You want to stay close to campus. You can even take the Gold Line Shuttle to Waterman and Kingshighway and have less than a six-block walk. Dressel’s will greet you like a true English Pub. No TV, no game, and no misbehaved children. A great place to grab some of the best pub food around, including one of the best burgers around and Welsh chips that are simply St. Louis’ best. Relax, read a book and have some great food and drinks without the Super Bowl.
Crown Candy Kitchen (North St. Louis)
Although it is in a run-down neighborhood and closes at 6 p.m., Crown Candy Kitchen has been a staple in the St. Louis community for decades. They are best known for their huge 24-ounce malts and shakes and their “Heart Stoppin’ BLT.” I recommend the Banana Malt. In business since 1913, the restaurant will take you back in time to the original soda fountains. (www.saucemagazine.com/oconnells)
Fast Eddie’s Bon Air (Alton, Ill.)
I know it’s slightly far (25-30 miles) but a good group of friends that loves cheap food, live music, and a diverse crowd of patrons will love Fast Eddie’s. This restaurant is known for its 99-cent half-pound burger and the 29-cent shrimp cocktail. Additionally, Fast Eddie’s serves up beer, and quite a lot of it – around 4,000 kegs of draft beer and thousands of bottles and mixed drinks are in their arsenal. Take note, you must be 21 to enter. Get directions at www.fasteddiesbonair.com.
Boathouse (Forest Park)
It’s cold and muggy outside. So go over to the Boathouse in Forest Park and relax next to their large wood-burning fireplace and enjoy a wide variety of foods from the menu. (www.boathouseforestpark.com)
Super Bowl XL isn’t for everyone. I mean, honestly, who really cares who wins between the Seahawks and the Steelers? Why waste your whole Sunday afternoon and night watching a battle of two boring teams? You’re going to know everything that happens come Monday anyway. If you’re not a big football fan, go out and experience St. Louis and try something that doesn’t have anything to do with the Super Bowl.
