Were you one of many students passed over for debate tickets? Are you tired of the media chaos on campus? Well, then, take a break from it all and support Bears athletics. Here’s a breakdown of the teams that will be in action this weekend and what they’ll be up against.
Football
Location: Chicago, IL
Opponent: University of Chicago (1-2)
Edge: The Bears should have no problem stopping the Maroons on the ground, as they average a mere 76.7 rushing yards per game. If they can stop Chicago’s dual-quarterback passing game, they should come out on top.
Bear Spotlight: Brad Duesing-The team’s most lethal offensive weapon will need to put up some big numbers in order to lead his team to
victory.
Volleyball
Location: Home
Opponent: Greensboro College, University of Wisconsin-La Crosse, Illinois College, Fontbonne University
Edge: Following three crucial conference victories and several tough matches against highly-ranked national powerhouses, the Bears should be able to tune up for a second round of UAA play against weaker opponents.
Bear Spotlight: Megan Houck-Look for the Bears’ leader in kills and service aces to have a big weekend against several lesser teams.
Men’s Soccer
Location: Home
Opponent: Emory University (8-1)
Edge: Coach Joe Clarke’s squad will take on perennial national powerhouse Emory after picking up a tie against them in 2003. Ranked No. 11 in the country, Emory boasts a dangerous attack featuring sophomore Chad Chambers, who tallied six goals and two assists in the week of Sept. 27 alone.
Bear Spotlight: Rob Weeks-The 6’5″ forward leads the team in goals and usually comes up big in important conference games.
Women’s Soccer
Location: Home
Opponent: Emory University (4-5)
Edge: Despite their losing record, Emory has been hot as of late, winning their last three games. They seem to have found their stride this season, defeating No. 17 University of Mary Washington on Sept. 4. The Bears should be able to handle Emory, but must be careful not to underestimate any conference match-up.
Bear Spotlight: Meghan Marie Fowler-Finn-Look for the school’s fifth leading scorer all-time to be a constant offensive threat.
Cross Country
Location: Carbondale, IL
Opponent: A field of 15 of the region’s top teams
Edge: After the men’s and women’s teams finished fifth and fourth, respectively, at the Missouri-Rolla Invitational on Sept. 25, look for the Bears to bounce back after two weeks off.
Bear Spotlight: Maggie Grabow-The women’s team will need Grabow to finish highly in order to have a chance at a top-three score for the meet.
