The Washington University women’s soccer team won its fourth consecutive game this Saturday, Sept. 11, as they upset third-ranked Ohio Wesleyan University 3-2.
The ninth-ranked Bears were again led by sophomore midfielder Meghan Marie Fowler-Finn. Fowler-Finn came into the game leading the team in virtually every offensive category. She led the Bears in goals (2), points (9), shots (15), shot percentage (.267), and game-winning goals (2).
Fowler-Finn got the Bears on the board in the 18th minute as she scored off a rebound to give the University a 1-0 lead. But Ohio Wesleyan wasted little time in evening the score; Sarah Wall of Ohio Wesleyan scored on a breakaway just 46 seconds after the Bears’ initial goal to tie the game at 1-1. Ohio Wesleyan retook the lead with a penalty kick goal by Raquel Gonzalez two minutes into the second half. Gonzalez was awarded the penalty kick for being taken down in the box. Fowler-Finn answered the Ohio Wesleyan score to tie the game with a 30-yard shot in the 68th minute of play. Sophomore Sara Schroeder delivered the game-winning goal for the Bears in the 79th minute of play. Schroeder was able to take advantage of a goal-clearing miscue by Westminster to score the deciding goal.
Fowler-Finn’s two goals in the game give her 14 career goals and the ninth spot overall on the University’s all-time list. In the net, senior keeper Charlotte Felber saved one shot in earning her fourth win of the year and her 23rd career victory. The victory moved her into a tie for fourth on the University’s all-time list.
The Bears are off to an incredible start for the season, outscoring and outshooting their opponents in nearly every category while remaining undefeated and toppling three top-ten opponents. Their goals scored per game average is 1.75, while they have limited opponents to 0.75 goals per game. The Bears’ defense has shut down the opposing offense, only allowing three goals on 32 shot attempts in four games. Felber has made 11 saves on 14 shots on goal, giving her a .786 save percentage.
The Bears will return home to take on Aurora University at 5 p.m. on Friday, September 17.
