St. Louis, Mo., April 22, 2001 – Senior hurdler Suzi Ramsey earned Women’s Most Outstanding Performer and head coach Rich Schilling and assistants Eileen McAllister, David Cerven and Claudine Rigaud were tabbed with Women’s Coaching Staff of the Year honors as the women’s track and field team captured its second-straight University Athletic Association (UAA) outdoor title at the UAA Championships this past weekend in Chicago, Ill. The men’s squad, defending outdoor champions, finished in fourth.
Washington U. won 11 of the 20 events and placed at least one athlete in the top three of each event as the Bears rolled up 252 points. Emory was second with 206, while Brandeis trailed in third with 104. WU had seven individual winners, including two titles each for Ramsey and Kammie Holt. Both the 400 and 1,600-meter relays were victorious.
Ramsey clocked a 15.31 in winning the 100-meter hurdles by just .03 seconds, then rocketed to a 1:04.59 in taking the 400-meter hurdles in an NCAA Championships provisional qualifying time.Holt won a UAA title in the long jump with a leap of 5.33 meters and took the triple jump title with a distance of 10.8 meters. Adriana Leigh was second to Holt in both events.
Natasha Richmond won the shot put, finished second in the hammer throw and was third in the discus throw. Brooke Lane won the 10,000 meters, Sarah Springer won the pole vault, Valerike Lasko won the 400-meters and Susan Chou won the 1,500 meters. Elizabeth Stoll was second in the javelin and third in the high jump, Mindy Kuhl was second in the 1,500 meters and third in the 800 meters and Emily Lahowetz was second in the 5,000 meters and third in the 3,000 meters. Lasko added a second-place finish in the 200 meters and Jen Shew was third in the 100 meters.
Junior Todd Bjerkaas made a strong big for Most Outstanding Performer honors on the men’s side, winning the 100 meters by nearly four tenths of a second with an 11.04 and taking the 200 meters in 22.04. Pat MacDonald was second in the 5,000 meters and third in the 10,000 meters. Brett Pond was third in the pole vault, Nathan Herschberger was third in the 1,500-meters and Quincy Davis was third in the 110-hurdles. Jeremy and Justin Mikecz finished second and third in the 3,000-meter steeplechase.
