Six Washington University
Players Named to the All-UAA Squad

St. Louis, Mo. – Six Washington University softball players were named to the All-University Athletic Association (UAA) Softball Team, honoring their performances at the UAA Softball Tournament held in Altamonte Springs, Fla. March 9-14.
Three Bears were named to the First-Team, and three more were placed on the Second-Team in a vote by the league’s coaches. Seniors Anne Gregory and Jamie Rosen joined sophomore Kate Gase, Fostoria on the Association’s First-Team. On the Second-Team are senior Keri McWilliams, sophomore Liz Smith and freshman Jennifer Hiller.
Gregory led the Bears in their eight-game tournament with seven RBI and 11 hits, including four doubles and a homerun. Her .621 slugging percentage was tops on the squad, and her .379 tournament batting average was second only to Gase. Gase,the starting centerfielder, hit .391 for the tourney, scoring a team-high eight runs. Her five RBI was second only to Gregory, and she went four-for-four in stolen bases. Finally, senior catcher Rosen hit .360 and her defense was flawless, making zero errors in 45 chances, including nine assists from behind the plate.
McWilliams hit .292 in the eight-game stretch, driving in three runs and striking out just once in 24 at-bats. She added a double and one stolen base to her numbers. Smith, the teamös ace, went 4-1 with a 2.16 earned run average. In 32.1 innings, the California native struck out 18 and walked just four, not allowing any homeruns. Newcomer Hiller hit .346 drove in four runs while showing some power, lashing a double and triple in her 26 at-bats. The versatile infielder/outfielder, who bats leadoff for the Bears, led the squad with a .458 on-base percentage, inducing five walks.
WU finished 5-3 in the UAA tournament, second behind Emory University. The Bears are in just their second season as a varsity sport. WU won the UAA softball title in the team’s inaugural season, and finished 22-10. This season, the Bears are off to a 14-13 start, and square off in a doubleheader against hometown rival Fontbonne College on Monday, April 8 at Shaw Park beginning at 4 p.m.
