The Student Union (SU) Senate voted against the proposed 2008-2009 General Budget on Wednesday evening after convening for more than four hours.

Members of the Senate were mainly concerned with reduced allocations for certain executive groups, such as Mr. Wash. U., and with other areas in the budget that were deemed excessive.

In the Senate’s version of the budget, an additional $10,000 was allocated for the executive appeals fund. Half of that money was taken from eliminating the printing of SU’s “How Things Work” manual and half was created by eliminating media fees like advertising in Student Life.

Also present at the meeting were members of the Treasury, which had approved the budget on Tuesday, and members representing various student groups advocating for more funding.

During the meeting, senators and treasurers clashed, with senators looking to revise the budget to reflect student concerns and treasury representatives staying in line with budget philosophy espoused by the SU executives.

Specifically, some senators objected to the decision not to fund Mr. Wash. U.’s use of Edison Theater.

This is the first time in recent memory that a proposed budget has been voted down by the Senate forcing the reevaluation of the budget by both SU legislative bodies.

A joint session is to be held on Sunday at 12:00 p.m to resolve the status of the budget.
