Review: PlayRadioPlay!

Nadia Sobehart

The creation of 18-year-old Daniel Hunter, PlayRadioPlay! is an interesting addition to the world of music. The artist’s electro-pop songs are easy to listen to and a good addition to any mellow playlist.

PlayRadioPlay! has come a long way since its local touring days: The group has now toured with Gym Class Heroes, Fall Out Boy and Young Love. Daniel’s description of the sound? “It’s Texas Straight-edge Softcore.” His playfulness with words also comes across in his music. The album’s namesake song, “Texas,” sings “Oh girl I’ve been told/ when I grow old/ I’ll be alone/ but I don’t mind/ if I’m in Texas.”

Beyond lyrics, the sound is progressively distinct throughout the album. “My Attendance Is Bad But My Intentions Are Good” has a good beat and unique mixing. “Madi Don’t Leave” is equally interesting in that the lyrics, though ballad-esque, are accompanied with a significantly upbeat instrumentation.

Overall, the album seems like an experimentation of sound; some results are clever, while others miss the mark. Regardless, PlayRadioPlay!’s sound is mature for a newcomer to the industry. From its relaxing background to its interesting lyrics, PlayRadioPlay!’s “Texas” is worth checking out.

Two songs you should definitely find are “See You Soon” (which is reminiscent of early All American Rejects and Hellogoodbye)and “Some Crap About the Furniture.” In general, the sound is nice and mellow. My only critique is that the album is very relaxing, sometimes to the point of being sleep-inducing. However, if you appreciate mellow, unique tracks and talented young artists, you should definitely take a listen to PlayRadioPlay!’s new album.
