Sheryl Crow: Detours

Rating: 2/5

Attempting to produce another well-cherished album, Sheryl Crow missed the target with her newest CD, “Detours.” With the exception of one song, “Love Is All There Is,” the majority of her songs are lacking the quintessential brand of Sheryl Crow: her down-to-earth, pop-infused country sound. Crow reminds us that for every hit there are many, many misses.

Most of her songs are poorly put together, as if she aimed at producing a great song and gave up along the way; the album just came up short. For example, “Make It Go Away” is reminiscent of an adolescent who can’t deal with her problems; the chorus at the end is a terrifying concoction for someone with so much talent and writing experience. “Out of Our Heads” was a very confusing song, laden with sounds not quite pop, nor reggae, nor Sheryl Crow sounding at all; it reminded me of a toddler sing-a-long song with grown-up lyrics.

“Gasoline,” on the other hand, brings back the Crow style but lacks the essential ingredients of a good song. In the end, the album is mediocre at best. Perhaps its one of those albums that needs time to grow on you or maybe it’s just a sore spot on Crow’s long list of accomplishments. She won’t be receiving any Grammys for this one.
