School of Social Work to launch new initiative

The Alliance for Building Capacity (ABC) will be formally initiated April 9. The initiation will take place in the Brown Hall Lounge at 5 p.m., with Jewelle Taylor Gibbs, Ph.D., as the keynote speaker. Gibbs is a Washington University Distinguished Visiting Scholar and Professor Emerita at University of California-Berkeley’s School of Social Welfare. As the invention of the George Warren Brown School of Social Work, the ABC will strengthen the collective nonprofit social service agencies of the St. Louis area by further educating and training their staff. In addition, the ABC will help to link the nonprofit social service agencies to the resources available at Brown, WU and local professionals. The creation of the ABC program will replace the Technical Assistance Program, which was started in the fall of 2002.

Dance Marathon announces their grand total

Dance Marathon ended its 12 straight hours of fundraising over a month ago, but since then, donations have continued to come in from both Washington University and the greater St. Louis communities. The official grand total in donations is $58,156.36. The money will be equally divided between both Cardinal Glennon and The St. Louis Children’s Hospital on behalf of the Children’s Miracle Network. The fundraising of Dance Marathon was a collective effort on the part of students from St. Louis, Fontbonne, and Washington Universities, as well as local Pattonville High School. The event consisted of twelve hours of dancing accompanied by live performances by WU student groups, as well as other outside performers, games and food. Additionally, many Miracle kids and their families attended the event in order to thank the dancers for their involvement, and to celebrate their successful recoveries from ailments ranging from liver failure to fetal surgery.
