EnWeek events geared towards all students

Have you ever wondered how engineering students can stand to work so hard all the time? Have you ever wondered what they do for fun? EnWeek, which started this past Monday and culminates with the engineering formal on Saturday, November 17, is the engineering students’ answer to these questions.

According to sophomore Marc Pendlebury, chair of the Encouncil Student Services Committee and co-coordinator of the week’s events, “The main goal of EnWeek is to get our name out and do fun stuff for the rest of the campus.”

The week’s activities, organized by the committee, are funded largely through Student Union funds and co-sponsorship with organizations such as the Biomedical Engineering Society and Filmboard. Pendlebury estimates that the cost for the entire week totaled $8,000.

“Donuts for the campus were probably the biggest expense,” he said. The committee ordered two batches of over 800 donuts and handed them out at various locations around campus.

Pendlebury emphasized that this year’s EnWeek included many more new activities than the previous seven from last year:

“We wanted to expand EnWeek and really make it bigger and better.” He pointed out that morning events, such as Chemistry Day and Battle Bots, were new, along with most of the afternoon events.

While it is hard to estimate how many people participated in the various events, Pendlebury is confident that at least 2,000 students took some part in EnWeek.

With activities ranging from a Duct-Tape competition to a screening of the movie “Spaceballs,” the week was geared toward getting students outside of engineering excited about the week. S’Mores in the Swamp, for example, drew many students living on the South Forty.

According to Jack Johnson, the other coordinator of EnWeek, the free marshmallows and s’mores on Tuesday night “went like crazy.”

“EnWeek is really about having fun for a week and celebrating engineering,” said Pendlebury.
