Pop and rock. Kegs and couches. Crazy Town and Eve 6.
Accompanied by a smorgasbord of musical groups, activities and inflatable games, Crazy Town and Eve 6 are slated to perform at spring WILD, to be held this semester on Saturday, April 28.
The Music Makers
Hailing from Southern California, Crazy Town is best known for their current Top 40 single “Butterfly” from their album “The Gift of Game.” The seven-man group is gaining popularity with its rock and hip-hop concoction of vocals, guitars, and turntables. Eve 6, a trio of Los Angeles punk-rock popsters, is best known for the 1999 hit “Inside Out.”
Performing with Crazy Town and Eve 6 are Saliva, Stereomud, Axis, and the B-Side Folk Union.
Five bands competed for the opening slot at WILD at last Saturday’s Sounds of the Swamp, hosted by CS40. A panel of five judges, including one from Team 31, selected the B-Side Folk Union to perform.
“It’s an ecclectic mix of music,” said Lou Goldhaber, co-chair of Team 31. “The bands were chosen based on the responses we’ve gotten on the genres of music we’ve not recently had at WILD. With that information, we explored many options.”
Included in the pack of bands are pop, rock, hip-hop, and other styles of music.
“If you don’t like one of the bands, give the other bands a try,” said Stephen Casey, co-chair of Team 31. “We’re trying to pick bands that will appeal to as large a number of people as possible.”
Casey noted that many colleges and universities have festivals the same weekend as WILD, leading to difficulties in scheduling acts to perform: “Availability is a big key.”
As always, WILD will play host to student group activities and inflatable games proir to band performances. Student group events and inflatable games begin at noon, second stage events run from 1:30 p.m. to 4 p.m., and main stage acts perform from 4 p.m. to 10 p.m.
Alcohol Answers
This semester, Team 31 lowered the number of kegs from 40 to 30 and raised the cost to register a keg from $10 to $25.
Team 31 executives say that ongoing discussions with administrators, WUPD, CS40, the Office of Student Activities, and Team 31 sparked changes to the alcohol policy at WILD with the intention of refocusing the event from an alcohol-related affair to a concert atmosphere.
“The administration and us came to a consensus that the focus on alcohol is not the direction of where WILD wants to go in the future. It’s a concert, not an alcoholic event,” said Goldhaber. “Team 31 and the administration are making strides.in regard to reducing the alcohol presence at WILD. Reducing the number [of kegs] by ten won’t inhibit the quality of the event for any student.”
The sober contact for each keg will be required to attend a meeting the week of WILD to discuss their responsibilities and roles to avoid over-consumption.
Kegs can be registered from April 9 to April 25, from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m., in Room 303 of the Women’s Building.
Date Check
In the past, WILD has been held on Friday evenings, with events beginning in the late afternoon. Team 31 said Friday events posed some problems with scheduling, sound checks, and security. This semester, WILD will take place on a Saturday.
“We’ve been accumulating.the positives and negatives of having [WILD] on a Friday. Theoretically we thought that having it on a Saturday, some of the negatives could be eliminated, but some new negatives could come up.we just want to see how this plays out,” said Casey.
Casey added that whether or not WILD will be held on Saturday after this semester will be decided following the event.
Goldhaber said that one advantage to holding WILD on a Saturday, outside the lack of class distractions, is that the event will have more of the “appeal of an all-day event.”
