Greek critique painfully accurate
Dear Editor:
I’ve read Joshua Trein’s article [“Sizing up Greek Life,” Sept. 27, pg. 9].
As a proud Sigma Chi alumnus, I must reluctantly agree with many of his observations. We have been involved in many instances consistent with his negative connotations.
But this is NOT Sigma Chi, it is an aberration that has occurred at Washington University and other Universities. Sigma Chi has suspended five of our chapters since Jul. 1, 2003 for drug and alcohol problems, alleged hazing, and other violations of fraternity or University policy. Sigma Chi is trying an experiment at Washington University with an Alumni Advisory Board and many specific requirements the chapter must meet or their charter will be revoked. This is in conjunction with the University.
Hazing in any form is not tolerated. Dehumanizing the pledges is not tolerated. These are to be our future Brothers, and our pledges are young men that we want to include in our Brotherhood, not convince them of their shortcomings.ÿDegrading the opposite sex is opposite of all our teachings.ÿTo be candid, we have a way to go.
Please go to http://sigmachi.com to see what we are really all about.
