Bernell DorroughThe Mekons, the seminal Leeds rocksters, celebrated their 25th birthday in 2002, and last Tuesday released an album of songs written before they were rock stars, back in the late 70s. As the liner notes of “Punk Rock” will tell you, the Mekons always loved punk, and were rather devastated to be born during punk’s heyday only to come of age during the desolate, dramatic 80s. To celebrate their latest release, the band announced a tour commencing March 9 in Pittsburgh. The month-long tour comes nowhere near St. Louis before ending in San Francisco on March 24th. Continuing with the disappointment, the new CD kind of sucks. But just because the Mekons’s new CD “Punk Rock” is disappointing doesn’t mean your weekend has to be! And that’s the point.
Tonight you have more options for live music than there are types of cheese in your fridge (and that includes the moldy chunk). Die Symphony at Mississippi Nights; Dierks Bentley, Kellie Coffey and George Strait at the Savvis Center; Element Eight, Ill Nino and Sevendust at the Pageant. On second thought… keep your money in your pocket. There’s nothing that this evening’s docket of pseudo-goth, cow-tipping country, or crappy nu-metal has to offer that a “Welcome Back to School” keg party can’t trump in spades.
It really is too bad about those Mekons though.
