Opening what they hope will be a fruitful season, the Washington University swimming and diving teams fell to Saint Louis University Oct. 4 at the Washington University Millstone Pool.
The men were lead by sophomore Eric Triebe, who won the 100-yard breaststroke in dominant form, besting his nearest competitor by five seconds. Triebe also emerged victorious in the 50-yard freestyle and the 200-yard breaststroke. Sophomore Michael Slavik triumphed in the 100- and 200-yard freestroke events. The men lost 172-119.
Sophomore Tracey Hendrickson, who won the 1,000-yard freestyle and the 500-yard freestyle events, paced the women. Her 1,000-yard swim set a pool record and barely missed the school record set by Hendrickson last season.
While the Bears failed to field a diver in the men’s competition, senior Paloma Garner preformed dutifully for the women. Garner dived her way to the one-meter win and the three-meter victory. Despite Garner’s effort, the women lost to their in-city rivals 191-102.
Next on the slate for the Bears is a meet against Drury University. The squad will travel to Springfield, MO for the Oct. 18 competition.
