Former Dean of Students pleads guilty on child pornography charges

Justin X. Carroll, former associate vice chancellor for students and dean of students, pled guilty to charges of child pornography earlier this afternoon. Carroll had previously pled not guilty at his Feb. 8 arraignment, but filed a motion on July 24 prior to his Aug. 7 jury trial date that he had possible intent to change his plea.

Now awaiting his sentencing, which is scheduled for Oct. 26, Carroll could face a maximum penalty of 20 years in prison and $250,000 fines.

The University declined to comment on Carroll’s guilty plea as the case is still a pending legal matter.

Prior to his criminal indictment, Carroll’s tenure at Washington University stretched 36 years across multiple administrative roles. Carroll was scheduled to formally resign due to “personal reasons” on Feb. 1 when indictment proceedings on Jan. 30 revealed the nature of the federal investigation that begun on Dec. 20, 2016.

Earlier this month, Rob Wild, associate vice chancellor for student affairs and dean of the First Year Center, was named as Carroll’s replacement.
