The Washington University professor who spent several years as deputy principal coordinator for the Mars rover Opportunity was recently selected to contribute to a new rover mission.

The Washington University “Bombshells,” a new cheering section started by members of the women’s basketball team, is looking to bring crowds to athletic events and invigorate the spirit of the student body. Senior Alex Hoover formed the group hoping to garner fan support for other women’s varsity programs.

The Mars Exploration Rovers, Spirit and Opportunity, launched in the summer of 2003. Now, more than six years later, the two robot geologists are still running and collecting data on Mars, though their missions were expected originally to last only 90 days each.
