When forward Melissa Gilkey graduated last year, the Washington University women’s basketball team lost its second all-time leading scorer and third-leading rebounder. While it may be difficult for any one player to fill Gilkey’s shoes this season, the No. 11 Bears were treated to a trio of strong frontcourt performances on their way to capturing their ninth straight McWilliams Classic title.
A strong weekend for the No. 9 Washington University women’s basketball team kicked off what it hopes will be a season of achievement. The Bears trounced Buena Vista University 95-73 Friday night and followed with a close 63-60 win over Ohio Northern University to win the 12th annual McWilliams Classic in the WU Field House.
The Washington University women’s basketball team controlled almost every minute of the McWilliams Classic over the weekend, with a 82-62 victory in the championship game against Rhodes College and a 75-37 rout over Rose-Hulman Institute of Technology.
