The women’s side won 11 events overall, with sophomores Chi Pham and Meghan Lam taking two victories each. Pham won the 200-yard freestyle (1:58.98) and the 200-yard individual medley (2:10.94), while Lam finished first in the 100-yard backstroke (1:00.99) and 200-yard backstroke (2:12.86).

“Chi and Meghan have been working really hard and been very focused, and it made a difference in how they swam this weekend,” head coach Brad Shively said. “Chi was able to swim against one of the best breaststrokers in the nation, and it was really good for her to get that experience in.”

The Bears swept the 200-yard butterfly and the 50-yard freestyle as well. Freshman Sara Taege, sophomore Grace Murray and freshman Hannah Chase took first, second and third respectfully in the 200-yard butterfly. This was Taege’s first career victory (2:13.75).

“The women’s team swam really well, out touching their opponents and working really hard for each win,” said Pham.

Jilian Fenton | Student Life

Freshman Michael Postetter competes against DePauw on Saturday, Oct. 29. The men’s team lost 173-120.

Sophomore Jennifer Tartavull led the Red and Green in the 50-yard freestyle, securing first place in 25.07 seconds. Sophomore Allison Siegel finished second in 25.73 seconds, and junior Veronica Tse captured third in 26.35 seconds.

“Jenn swam really well winning the 50 free,” Pham said. “She didn’t swim with us last year, but she came in this year and has stepped up and become a dominant player, being one of our strongest sprinters.”

In the 400-yard freestyle relay, the women’s side picked up a win as Tartavull, Taege, senior Amy Vanlishout and sophomore Paige VanTassell beat out the closest competitors by 5.14 seconds.

Also earning victories were senior Catherine Rafferty-Millett in the 100-yard butterfly, VanTassell in the 500-yard freestyle, Murray in the 1,000-yard freestyle and Tartavull in the 100-yard freestyle.

“The women brought great effort, and it happened immediately taking the medley relay,” Shively said. “We wanted to start that meet off with a bang, and we kept gaining momentum and taking victories. We can’t rest on it or become complacent, but it was a great step for them to have good swims across the board.”

The men’s side fell short to a much stronger men’s DePauw team comprised of a handful of strong freshman and a few national swimmers.

“The DePauw’s men’s team is much better than their women’s,” Pham said. “Our men’s team is very young, as we lost some strong swimmers last year. The younger guys are stepping up and trying to fill those gaps, and they are doing really well.”

Sophomore Jason Wan and senior Mike Rao led the team. Wan captured two events in the 100-yard backstroke (54.88) and the 200-yard backstroke (1:59.34), and Rao won the one- and three-meter diving competitions. Freshman Zane Turpin also captured a victory in the 200-yard butterfly.

“We had some really great swims and definitely did better than previously,” Shively said. “Our distance guys, backstrokers and flyers did a lot better. It was a really good thing to face strong competition, as we haven’t seen any strong Division III competition yet. It was a good reminder to keep working and get stronger and get better.”

The Bears head to Chicago on Saturday, Nov. 5, to face UAA rival University of Chicago and the Illinois Institute of Technology. With only a week to prepare for one of the stronger teams in the conference, the team is going to work hard this coming week.

“Chicago is going to be our first in-conference meet, and they have a lot of depth,” Pham said. “We need to remember for Chicago that every race counts and focus on beating the person next to you. It will be a good meet; we are very pumped about it.”

Buck finished in a tie for third place (73-78) at the Pat Clouse Invitational this past weekend.

As another week passed, another quality victory came for the No. 3 Washington University women’s golf team.

The Bears (304-306, 610) led from beginning to end at the Pat Clouse Invitational in Springfield, Ohio, as they defeated No. 2 DePauw University (316-317, 633) by 23 strokes. Rounding out the top five teams of the competition were No. 25 Wittenberg University (309-333, 642), No. 9 Allegheny College (325-321, 646) and NAIA No. 22 Walsh College (324-325, 649).

Freshman Olivia Lugar won her fourth tournament of the season with a two-day score of 147 (73-74). Lugar lowered her scoring average to 74 and her versus par average to 2.20, the best marks in Division III.

“I was striking the ball very well, and my management was pretty good. I was shooting for space on the green, but I was able to get up and down on the second day,” Lugar said.

Junior Hannah Buck (73-78) and freshman Taylor Fagan (75-76) tied for third with a score of 151. It was a career-best two-round score for Fagan.

The win marks the third time this season that the Bears have defeated DePauw in a tournament.

“I think that after seeing the rankings and having been third, I think it motivated some of us to work harder and come back and beat them,” Lugar said. “When we feel like we are better as far as the rankings, we just went out to prove why we are up there and why we’re going two be contenders.”

In six tournaments this season, the Tigers have finished first once and second five times, including three times to the Bears.

“Beating DePauw is a big deal. They are a great team, and they have been for the past few years,” Buck said. “The past two years I’ve been here, we’ve always looked at them as being [out of reach]. If we played really well we could beat them, but beating them three times shows how far we’ve come the last year. They are ranked second in the country and were a favorite to win nationals last year, so us being able to beat them definitely gives us some confidence.

With the fall season coming to a close, the victories over ranked opponents should give Wash. U. some confidence and momentum heading into the off-season.

“I hope it helps our team; our players understand that they can compete at a high level like [DePauw,] a team that we’ve been watching the last couple years,” head coach Sean Curtis said. “The fact is that they’ve all been good contests [this fall]. They’ve been close. They’ve got a veteran team that came back from an outstanding team last year. The important thing is we carry that forward and remember what that felt like later on.”

The Bears’ next tournament will be the Northern Kentucky Spring Invitational in Perry Park, Ky. The team will have almost five months between action, but as Curtis put it, the spring season is like starting over.

“Golf is pretty unique in that both seasons count equally as much towards statistical rankings and polls. Obviously, it’s great to get off to such a good start,” Curtis said. “In golf we almost have to start over when we get into the spring. Now we’ve got to do it all again come springtime. The last couple years, it’s gotten better every spring. We are learning how to just get ready faster and prepare ourselves for what’s going to happen in the spring.

“I think its going to be much of the same, and hopefully we’ll get a bid at the end of the spring and we’ll get to go back to the national championship, and all these good experiences we had in the fall and leading up to it are going to help us be ready to play that very first day. We know that we can go out there and we can compete with anybody there.”

The No. 5 Washington University women’s golf team left the Katman Klassic hosted by No. 2 DePauw University with a lot to feel good about following their score of 647.

While the Bears only managed a third-place finish, they finished just one stroke out of second place and ahead of three other ranked opponents.

The Bears turned in a 323 on day one and found themselves tied for second place trailing the hosts by only nine strokes, but Sunday quickly turned into a battle for second place as DePauw posted a 298 and surged to a 34-stroke victory.

While Wash. U. held firm with a 324, for a 36-hole total of 647, No. 18 Olivet College overcame a three-stroke first-round deficit to knock the Bears into third place by just one stroke. The team did, however, hang onto leads over No. 18 Wittenberg University (325-329, 654), No. 8 Illinois Wesleyan University (323-334, 657) and No. 22 Hanover College (351-357, 708). The Bears have now beaten IWU all four times they’ve faced them this year.

Up and down the roster, the golfers took advantage of their first chance to play in good golfing conditions to post some of their best scores of the spring. The two co-medalists of last week’s Illinois College Spring Invitational, sophomore Hannah Buck (78-77, 155) and freshman Andi Hibbert (81-81, 162), led the way again this week, finishing in ties for third and tenth, respectively. Buck was the only golfer not representing DePauw to finish in the top five.

“We were consistent, Hannah and Andi especially, and that’s a really good sign for us,” head coach Sean Curtis said. “I thought that we responded well to the challenge of playing a top team, and being paired with them both days at that…and in a field with five top-25 teams.”

Freshman Marcy Koonce also tied for 10th. After a first round 84, Koonce fired a 78, a career-best mark that moved her all the way up to a tie for 10th place, where she joined Hibbert and two other competitors. Conversely, freshman Allyson Chee (80-88, 168) shot her best career score on Saturday and was tied for fifth going into the second round, but dropped down to 23rd. She missed matching her best 36-hole score of her career by just one stroke.

The weekend performance of sophomore Melanie Walsh (84-88, 172) was a comforting turnaround for her. Last year, Walsh averaged a round of 82.8 in the regular season and was vitally important to the team’s run to the NCAA Championships, and this fall she appeared poised to continue as a driving force behind the team’s success as she posted five rounds of 81 or better. However, she has been noticeably absent from the top of the leaderboards since, shooting three rounds of 90 or worse.

“I think I’ve been struggling a little bit confidence[-wise] so far with the weather and coming off the winter,” Walsh said, “but I definitely think this is a step in the right direction.”

While she still only finished tied for 32nd, she did so while recording 11 pars on Saturday and working around a quintuple-bogey at the 3rd hole on Sunday.

“I think [Melanie] is on pace to come back to form,” Curtis added. “She’s been swinging good, and she really just needs a couple of breaks to go her way. She’s been an integral part of the team since she stepped on campus and I know she’ll continue to be.”

The team closes out the regular season this weekend at the Millikin Hickory Point Open before waiting to hear if they’ve made it to their second consecutive NCAA Championship at Howey-in-the-Hills, Fla., in May.

The No. 17 Washington University women’s tennis team (12-3) traveled to Madison, Wis., for the 2011 Midwest Invitational as the fifth seed and finished in third place overall with victories over No. 11 Gustavus Adolphus College and No. 14 DePauw University. The team’s only loss came to No. 3 University of Chicago.

The Bears were down three players at various times this past weekend: senior captain Elise Sambol, sophomore Kate Klein, and freshman Betsy Edershile.

“It’s difficult. We keep dropping people from our starting lineup,” freshman Theresa Petraskova said. “But we adapted well to the situation and changed our lineup a bit and still did really well even with all the injuries.”

In doubles against Gustavus on Saturday, the team took a crucial 2-1 lead, proving that its doubles play is just as strong as its singles. While the Bears dropped the No. 1 doubles match, they triumphed in the other two doubles matches to pick up two points. Sophomore Paige Madara and freshman Corinne Rauck took No. 2 doubles, 8-6, to improve their doubles record to 6-0, while a new pair, junior Natalie Tingir and sophomore Katie Helfgott, won a close 9-8 (8-6) match at No. 3 doubles.

“[The team is] playing phenomenal at doubles by putting balls away and playing aggressive,” head coach Kelly Stahlhuth said. “Even if they are down a couple points, they are figuring out how to come back. The great thing about doubles is they aren’t quitting and they know they can win.”

The Bears gained the singles split they needed to come out with a victory. Tingir won in three sets at No. 2 and the team also won at the No. 5 and No. 6 positions. “One of our goals this season was to beat Gustavus, so we went out there ready to play,” Petraskova said. “When we were up 4-3 and just needed one more singles match to win, we all started cheering and supporting our team.”

Earlier in the day, the Bears earned two points in singles play against Chicago, but then dropped the No. 1 doubles to lose the match 5-2. Madara came back to win at No. 4 and Rauck won the match at No. 5.

“Chicago has always been a difficult team for us to play; we always have good matches against them that could have gone either way,” Petraskova said. “They always push us and make us work.”

Overcoming a 2-1 deficit, the team picked up its first victory of the weekend against DePauw University on Friday, winning 6-3 in the invitational’s quarterfinals.

Madara and Rauck were the team’s sole victors in doubles play at No. 3, pulling out a 9-8, 9-7 win. The Bears lost at both No. 1 and No. 2 doubles, only earning one point going into singles play.

Wash. U. had to win four of the six singles matches to gain the overall victory. The team only lost at the No. 1 position, posting an impressive 5-1 record in singles play against the Tigers.

All five of the singles victories came in straight sets, but several were still very close. Sambol’s 7-6 (14-12), 7-5 victory at No. 4 was the closest of the day.

“[Against] DePauw, we were down 2-1, but we knew that if we got a point in singles we would win,” Stahlhuth said. “We got that one-point and then the team pulled through, winning five singles matches.”

The Bears return to action against McKendree University in Lebanon, Ill., on Thursday, April 14.

Wash. U. and Hope could meet for the third time in under a year if each team wins its opening round game of the 2011 Division III NCAA Women’s Basketball Championship on Friday.

The defending national champions have reached the postseason for the 22nd straight season.

The No. 12 Washington University women’s basketball team will face No. 10 Denison University in the opening round of the 2011 Division III NCAA Women’s Basketball Championship tournament on Friday night in Holland, Mich., as announced Monday by the NCAA Selection Committee.

“I felt like the body of work that these kids have accomplished, the kids deserve it,” head coach Nancy Fahey said. “We value the opportunity and are very excited to practice in March.”

The Bears received an at-large bid to the tournament after finishing the season 20-5 (11-3 University Athletic Association). The Bears finished second in the UAA to conference champion University of Chicago.

Wash. U. will need to play through a tough section of the tournament bracket in order to repeat as national champions. The Bears have been placed in the same opening section as host team No. 4 Hope College, No. 8 DePauw University and Denison.

The Bears have faced Denison (28-0, 14-0 North Coast Athletic Conference) twice in program history, with Wash. U. winning both match-ups.

The lack of familiarity of the Bears with Denison cannot be said of Hope and DePauw. After losing the 2009 national championship game to George Fox University in Holland, Mich., the Bears then defeated Hope in the 2010 national championship game to win their first title in nine years. In a rematch of the title game this season, The Flying Dutch, then ranked No. 2, defeated the then-No. 4 Bears 49-47 in a neutral site game.

The Bears also know the DePauw University Tigers well, as both teams compete in the annual Tip-Off Tournament every year along with Illinois Wesleyan University. The Bears defeated the Tigers 58-56 at DePauw in the consolation game of the tournament this year.

Three of the four teams playing in Holland have won national championships in the last six seasons. Hope won the title in 2006, and DePauw defeated Wash. U. in the 2007 national championship game.

“It’s a very tough bracket….I think it’s going to be a great bracket. Familiarity is great, but at the same time, they’re familiar with us….Hopefully we can take it one game at a time and see what happens.”

Chicago is also in the Bears’ quarter of the draw, and the two teams could meet for the third time this season in the quarterfinal round on March 14.

The University of Rochester has also reached the tournament out of the UAA.

On Sunday, sophomore Anne Sayers’ put-back at the buzzer gave the Bears a 58-56 victory over DePauw. Senior Kathryn Berger recorded a team-high 15 points, while Hannah Cusworth and Dani Hoover each added eight points. The win snapped DePauw’s 50-game home winning streak, dating back to the 2004 season.

On Friday, Nov. 19, the team lost to No. 3 Illinois Wesleyan 73-68. Berger scored 22 points, her season high, and Jordan Rettig had 15, but it was not enough to overcome the team’s 25 turnovers. The team missed its last five shots and did not record a field goal in the final 4:52 of the game.

Wash. U. (2-1) will host Augustana College on Sunday, Nov. 28.

“I guess that’s the funny thing about sports: One day you can play great, and the next day you can kind of lose it,” said Stein, the No. 2 seed in the 128 player field. “I let a couple of chances slip away, and I think that was the difference.”

Senior Max Woods, who was seeded 12th, advanced to the semifinals without dropping a set before also being taken out by Sweeney, 6-4, 7-6 (4).

“The best part of my game this weekend was focus,” Woods explained. “I just stayed focused on the moment, worked my way through tough situations and loved the big points.”

Entering the tournament, the men’s team boasted four players seeded in the top 15, including Stein, Woods, sophomore Adam Putterman (No. 11) and sophomore Gary Parizher (No. 15). Putterman advanced to the round of 16 before being taken out by Sweeney, 6-4, 6-3. Stein ousted Parizher in the round of 16, 6-4, 6-3.

Despite the fact that there were 32 schools involved in a pool of 128 total players, four of the Bears’ 10 singles players lost to a teammate.

“It was a shame they did not do us justice in separating us better in the draw,” head coach Roger Follmer said.

Ben Gottesdiener | Student Life

Sophomore Bryan Haywood returns the ball at a game on September 17th.

Stein faced sophomore Bryan Haywood in the round of 32 before knocking off Parizher on the same day, and Woods defeated sophomore Kareem Farah in the round of 32 and freshman Naveen Chadalavada in the round of 16.

“While it’s a little frustrating that we are taking each other out of the draw, it was also a testament to us and our program because our players were good enough to make it to the rounds where we would have to play each other,” Stein said.

On the doubles side of the draw, the No. 1 seeded Stein/Woods team, who won this tournament last year, made an early exit with an 8-4 loss in the round of 32 to Ben Kopecky and Sam Miles of DePauw University.

“They played an excellent match,” Woods said of the DePauw team. “I just think we have to be a little more focused than we were this time around.”

“All of the teams in the tournament are so solid that a team in the second round, on any given day, is good enough to beat the No. 1 seed,” Stein said.

Though the Bears have halted team practices until the spring, they will compete again from October 14-17 at the Small College Championships in Mobile, Ala.

“I know all the guys will go back to the drawing board in a week or two and work on the aspects of their games they can improve upon before we resume team practices again next semester,” Follmer said.

Despite seven new faces and three missing ones from last season’s national champion Washington University women’s volleyball team, the results on the court through one week hardly looked different from those of teams of years past.

The top-ranked Bears hosted their first invitational of the season this past weekend, emerging victorious from the Washington University Classic with a pair of victories on Saturday and another pair on Sunday.

On Saturday, the Red and Green first made quick work of Fontbonne University with a 3-0 trouncing (25-7, 25-16, 25-15) and followed it up with a 3-1 victory (23-25, 25-16, 25-19, 25-19) over University of Wisconsin-Platteville in the evening. The team then came back out on Sunday and grabbed two more wins with 3-1 victories over Simpson College (25-18, 26-28, 25-15, 25-15) and DePauw University (25-9, 25-16, 24-26, 25-13).

“It was a really good first tournament for us,” sophomore Kelly Pang said. “There were some ups and downs, but it was a really good starting point and we learned a lot from this tournament and we’re just excited to get better.”

The Bears quickly overwhelmed Fontbonne, as they took the first set 25-7 and never looked back. All 18 players on the roster made their way into the match at some point, and juniors Lauren Budde and Kristen Thomas led the way with seven and six kills, respectively. Freshman Tanya Marvi picked up six service aces.

UW-Platteville initially presented more of a challenge, as the Bears dropped the initial set for the first time this season before rebounding to take the next three. Sophomore Drew Hargrave had 17 kills, while Budde followed with 16 kills along with three and a half blocks. Freshman Kaia Schwartz hit well, with 9 kills and a .500 hitting percentage for the match.

Against Simpson on Sunday, the Bears broke a 1-1 tie with decisive 25-15 victories in the third and fourth sets. Everyone got in on the action, as five players—Budde, Thomas, Hargrave, senior captain Marya Kaminski and freshman Meghan Byrne—picked up at least six kills while Pang, Budde and Marvi each tallied at least 13 digs.

Wash. U. jumped DePauw right out of the gate in Sunday’s final match, taking the first set 25-9 and winning the second as well. After DePauw managed to steal the third set, the Bears made quick work of the final set to take the match. Budde and Hargrave were again the leaders, with 17 and 14 kills, while sophomore Marilee Fisher picked up 51 assists.

For the weekend, Budde paced the team with 56 kills and 7.5 blocks, while Fisher racked up 161 assists and Pang collected 86 digs. Budde, Pang and Fisher were named to the all-tournament team.

Hargrave also tallied 43 kills in the four contests. Not to go unnoticed, however, was the Class of 2014; Byrne, Schwartz, Marvi and Tessa Blood picked up playing time in all four matches.

“Our first big college tournament; it’s kind of intimidating, just…the magnitude of it, but I think we got over that pretty quickly and we all played up to par,” said Byrne, who picked up 36 kills in the tournament.

The Bears will be in action again next weekend, with top-ranked teams coming in for the WU/Asics National Invitational. The team will face No. 7 Carthage College and No. 19 Saint Olaf College on Friday and will go up against No. 10 Ohio Northern University—who swept Wash. U. last season—and No. 11 Wittenberg University on Saturday.

“Not only are they good teams, they’re very motivated to play us. Sometimes that ranking, No. 1, is a bullseye, but we don’t mind it. If we are No. 1, let’s prove that we’re No. 1,” head coach Rich Luenemann said. “This weekend is going to be a bunch of shootouts, and there’s not going to be one easy match at all.”

The tournament will begin at 5:30 p.m. on Friday in the Wash. U. Field House.

Washington University’s women’s tennis team will have to wait for another shot at DePauw University after falling 5-4 on Saturday.

The No. 11 Tigers are a familiar foe for the No. 15 Bears as they knocked out Wash. U. by the same score in the second round of the NCAA Tournament last year. The Red and Green are currently not scheduled to face DePauw again in the regular season.

Wash. U. faced trouble early on as each doubles duo fell to their opponents. Junior Karina Kocemba and freshman Kate Klein, playing together for only the second time, fell 8-1 at No. 1 doubles. Despite the loss, Kocemba is optimistic. “We’ve meshed really well together,” Kocemba said. “I’m loving it…and I think we can only get better.”

Adding to the Bears difficulty were a 8-4 loss by sophomore Natalie Tingir and senior captain Allison Dender at No. 3 doubles and a close 8-6 defeat by juniors Elise Sambol and Jaclyn Bild.

Despite the 3-0 deficit, the conclusion of the match was not foregone. “We had to regroup,” Coach Kelly Stahlhuth said. “We were kind of in shock. We didn’t have much time. We just got back to work.” Last weekend, doubles was the strongest component of play with the Bears sweeping Case Western Reserve. This weekend, singles nearly saved the day.

The wins started trickling in for Wash. U. in singles play as junior Karina Kocemba rolled over Greer Mackie in straight sets at No. 3 singles and sophomore Natalie Tingir downed Tricia Wilks 6-1, 6-3 at No. 4 singles. Freshman Kate Klein overcame a 2-6 loss to Kelly Gebert with scores of 6-3, 6-0 to net another Wash. U. point at No. 2 singles. “We came out ready for singles,” Kocemba said. “Everybody wanted to bounce back. We are just as good as their team. We’ve shown that we can come back from being down.”

The Red and Green rally began losing steam as junior Jaclyn Bild was blanked at No. 1 singles by Janelle Arita. But another hard fought battle between junior Elise Sambol and Courtney Ulrich resulted in Sambol’s 7-6 (7-4), 4-6, 6-2 triumph and gave hope for a Wash. U. upset. The upset attempt was short lived as captain senior Allison Dender fell 6-4, 6-4 at No. 6 singles, sealing the Bears second loss in a row.

The women’s tennis team takes a break next weekend before heading to Sewanee, Tenn. to take on the University of the South on March 6. “We’re going to play a wide range of teams, in and out of our division,” Kocemba said. “It’ll get us going strong into the full season…hopefully it will get us some matches underneath our belts.”

The match will be the first of five during Spring Break. “We just have to put it all together singles and doubles from no. 1 all the way down to doubles 3,” Stahlhuth said. “It’ll be a good test for us hopefully.”

The Washington University women’s basketball team ended a four-game losing streak against rival DePauw University Friday night before falling to No. 6 Illinois Wesleyan University on Saturday. The 1-1 weekend was good enough for a second place finish at the annual Tip-Off Tournament, hosted this year by Illinois Wesleyan in Bloomington, Ill.

After falling to DePauw four times in the last four seasons, including the 2007 NCAA Championship game, the No. 1 Bears finally defeated the No. 12 Tigers to open the four-team tournament. Both teams struggled on offense, shooting a combined 36.7 percent from the floor. But Wash. U. went on a few key runs to come away with a 57-52 victory.

“It was pretty exciting. Any game against them is going to be a defensive battle…so we knew that, and we executed pretty well, got a couple lucky bounces, and hit our free throws,” said Jaimie McFarlin, a graduate student and co-captain.

<img src="http://www.studlife.com/files/2009/11/basketballwonline.jpg" alt="Graduate student Jaimie McFarlin drives against Augustana College on Nov. 15. (Matt Mitgang | Student Life)

The Bears found themselves trailing 25-17 with 7:46 remaining in the first half, before closing with a 7-2 run to go into the locker room down just 26-24. A layup and free throw from senior Janice Evans and baskets from juniors Kathryn Berger and Alex Hoover brought the team back into the game.

Senior Zoë Unruh tied the contest at 26 with a layup to open the second half, and Berger’s three-pointer with 11:51 remaining in the game gave Wash. U. its first outright lead at 35-34.

The Tigers stormed back to build a three-point lead with just 1:22 remaining, but Hoover erased this deficit with a layup and four clutch free throws, giving the Bears a 55-52 lead with 14 seconds left to play. Lauren Goff missed a three for the Tigers, and Evans finished the game with two free throws.

While the offense never hit its rhythm, the Bears played well on defense, forcing 23 turnovers. Although Evans, McFarlin and Hoover scored 14, 12 and 10 points, respectively, the team shot just 35.5 percent from the floor and 1 for 12 from beyond the arc. The team did outscore DePauw 12-4 from the free throw line, which likely decided the contest.

Wash. U. then clashed with the No. 6 Titans. Fueled by losing on their home floor to Wash. U. in last season’s Elite Eight, the Titans managed a 58-53 win in another sloppy game.

Despite never leading in the game, the Wash. U. defense played well for the most part. The team forced 31 turnovers and held the Titans to 30.2 percent shooting for the night, but foul trouble cost Wash. U. the game. Illinois Wesleyan went 18 for 26 in free throws in the second half, scoring more than half of their 34 second-half points at the line.

Wash. U. shot just 32.1 percent for the game and 25 percent of three-pointers. While Wash. U. tied the game three times, including at 41 with just 4:57 left to play, the Bears could never take the lead.

Evans and McFarlin led the way with double-doubles, with Evans scoring 15 points and grabbing 13 rebounds and McFarlin scoring 12 with 10 boards, but the remaining three starters added just eight points. Sophomore Claire Schaeperkoetter added a career-high 11 points in 20 minutes off the bench.

“We missed a lot of open looks. We didn’t execute against Illinois Wesleyan with 31 team turnovers,” McFarlin said. “You’re not going to win too many ball games with 31 turnovers. We still were in it in the end, which is great and shows the effort of our team, but we didn’t execute at all.”

The Bears return home for the ninth annual McWilliams Classic on Saturday and Sunday. Wash. U. will face the Rose-Hulman Institute of Technology on Saturday at 3 p.m. and will play in either the consolation or championship game on Sunday against either the University of LaVerne or Rhodes College.
