Volleyball opens with two 3-0 wins
The No. 2 Washington University volleyball team began its 2012 campaign on Friday with a pair of 3-0 wins over Fontbonne University (25-13, 25-15, 25-15) and William Woods University (25-9, 25-15, 25-21) at the Wash. U. Field House.
Wash. U. relied on a balanced attack to beat Fontbonne, as 11 different players recorded at least two kills in the match. Junior Meghan Byrne led the way, with 8 kills on 10 attempts. Senior Marilee Fisher set 18 assists, while senior Kelly Pang tallied a team-high 10 of the team’s 50 digs.
The Bears had a similar result against William Woods. Led by an excellent back-row performance (58 digs, led by Pang’s 21), the Red and Green made it through a mediocre third set offensively to notch their second sweep of the day. Senior Drew Hargrave and freshman Allison Zastrow led the way with nine kills apiece.
The team will have four more games this weekend, as they face off against Eureka College and DePauw University on Saturday and Cornell College and Dominican University on Sunday.
