Wash. U. students from cities more nocturnal than St. Louis are often displeased with the late-night food offerings off-campus. Options are generally limited to the Hampton Avenue Fast Food Mecca or Friday and Saturday nights at Kopperman’s Deli in the Central West End. But those in search of a late night diner are in luck. Uncle Bill’s Pancake House serves up breakfast, lunch and dinner 24 hours a day, 7 days a week in a comfortable setting. The great service and variety of very tasty menu items make Uncle Bill’s a restaurant to be on the top of Wash. U. student’s late-night lists.
Uncle Bill’s is located on Kingshighway about a half mile past the Courtesy Diner and five miles away from campus. Like its sister restaurants, Uncle Bill’s is a St. Louis mainstay and has been in business for almost 45 years. Visitors pulling into the parking lot are struck by the giant sign exclaiming, “breakfast is served all night long.” Brinner fans, this is the place for you.
Sitting down in the restaurant is reminiscent of an old movie. The dining room has not been remodeled in twenty or thirty years but offers a very homey, comfortable feeling. The waitresses add to this warm aura, always being very helpful and making sure to keep your cup of coffee full.
An eclectic, loyal clientele comes from all over the city to eat at Uncle Bill’s. A recently created Myspace group, “Uncle Bill’s Fan Club,” has almost 40 members and all online reviews show great praise from local residents. The customers are friendly and you can often find one with whom to strike up a conversation. The friendly atmosphere makes it very easy to sit at your table long after you have finished your meal.
Uncle Bill’s menu features a wide array of items sure to please everyone. For breakfast, great eggs can be prepared any way and served with sausage, ham, bacon, biscuits, toast and most other things you can think of. As a “pancake house,” Uncle Bill’s would not live up to its name without a delicious assortment of pancakes. Their homemade batter can be paired with chocolate chips, blueberries or apples to create the freshest, most delicious pancakes in St. Louis. The French toast, Belgian waffles and crepes are also worth mentioning, but if you are in the mood for a sweet breakfast, the pancakes are certainly the right dish.
Those looking for a dish to satisfy the day’s other meals will not be upset. Uncle Bill’s serves an excellent variety of sandwiches, salads and other dishes. The burgers, while nothing amazing, will still fill that late-night red meat fix. The country-fried steak sandwich is also very good and worth trying if you are looking for something different.
If your sweet tooth is still not satisfied by the time you are through with your meal, be sure to order Uncle Bill’s very large scoop of ice cream with a variety of toppings. Those trying to really outdo themselves need to look no further than the chocolate Alaska, a large scoop of ice cream mixed with hot fudge, served atop a layer of pancakes. It might be the most delicious meal in the world.
With a vast menu, great service and a warm atmosphere, Uncle Bill’s is sure to keep late-night eaters satisfied. When we are not getting our Deli fix at Kopperman’s, we will certainly be at Uncle Bill’s eating pancakes at 3 a.m. on Saturday nights. We hope to see you there!
