If you could design sex, how would it feel? For those afraid, uninformed, or simply uninterested in sex toys, you may have never heard of a fleshlight, one of the more popular male sex toys that transcends sexual orientation. It’s exactly like what it sounds: While on one hand it is shaped and modeled after a flashlight, on the other, the inside contains a removable masturbatory sleeve resembling skin in texture, feel and color. On the sleeve’s most outer part, entry can resemble a mouth, a “lady” (a woman’s genitalia), a butt or “stealth,” a slit-like opening designed to be more discreet.

All in all, the whole concept of a fleshlight is designed to be discreet—in storage, it looks like a regular flashlight. Even more, you can remove the sleeve and store it separately. Most cases are black, but they also come in clear, and the sleeve can be pink or “mocha” colored. Even more, the inner part of the sleeve designed to rub on the sides of the penetrating object can be customized. Fleshlight’s original inner texture has a 19-millimeter-diameter canal, while “supertight” has a 13-millimeter canal and “ultratight” a 10-millimeter canal. Other textures include “wonder wave” with a 13-millimeter canal and gribbing ribs, “super ribbed” with a 13-millimeter canal and condensed ribs, and “speed bump” with a 13-millimeter canal and massaging beads. On the whole, the experience of the texture, the “skin” material the sleeve is made of and the choice of entry contributes to a higher level of masturbatory experience, resembling sexual pleasure with a partner more than, say, a vibrator or clitoral stimulator.

However, there are a few things about the fleshlight product that make it less ideal than it would seem. Though a fleshlight makes masturbating easier and more pleasurable and can even be used with partners, the “real skin” it is made of consists of elastomeric gel, a deformable rubber-like substance, and several other polymers. These aren’t dangerous materials, but together they decay and can form black spots from oil-based lubricants and soap. Even more, the combination of soap on the inside of the masturbatory sleeve and penetration can cause itching and burning. The original Fleshlight states that the product should be cleaned using only warm water, with a bit of isopropyl alcohol or corn starch (not baby powder, or talcum powder) if necessary. But, considering the closed shaft of the product, and its use in masturbation, is warm water enough to clean what is essentially a sperm collector?

That issue aside, the fleshlight, at the close of its first decade of existence, has been an innovative force in the sex toy industry and has become a staple to many. Visit www.fleshlight.com for more information.
