Fall’s Staple Pieces

Hana Schuster | Student Life
A seasonal wardrobe and a daily wardrobe are two very different things.

Your closet this fall, for example, might consist of military jackets and an endless variety of faux fur vests because that’s what’s hot at the moment, but a daily wardrobe consists of the idyllic go-to’s that never go out of style.

While fashion is ever-changing, there are a few practical pieces that are timeless and vital. So ladies, if you haven’t yet splurged, I assure you that these items will be worth the investment:

Skinny black pants
Black is slimming, in case you haven’t heard. And if you haven’t, I don’t know where you’ve been hiding for the past 20-some-odd years of your life. Skinny black jeans provide you with an easy foundation to flirt with color, texture, chicness and sophistication in a way that jeans don’t always allow.

A button-down blouse
preferably in a neutral tone. Not only can a button-down blouse go from day to night instantly, but it is also a professional look that presents a clean, effortless and elegant ensemble.

Black pumps
patent or matte. (For those of you who aren’t well-versed in the lingo…this means shiny or non-shiny leather.) Whether you purchase a peep-toe for spring or a closed-toe for harsher climates, be sure you have at least one pair of classic black pumps to ensure versatility in your wardrobe. If you’re not one to strut gracefully in a pair of five-inch stilettos, go for a lower heel. After all, wobbly ankles are by no means cute and, more importantly, never comfortable.

Basic loose tank
A basic tank provides you with a blank canvas to experiment with. If you’re facing the inevitable quarrel with your wardrobe and have “nothing to wear,” try decorating your tank with a few accessories–some big jewelry, perhaps. In this case, over-accessorizing is favorable.

Little black dress
commonly referred to as the “LBD” in the fashion world. Not only is an LBD practical and flattering for a cocktail event, but it can be worn during the day with a blazer for a more conservative look, then taken directly into the night to your favorite restaurant.

A clutch
An evening clutch is essential for a night on the town. You don’t want to be sporting a bulky tote out to the bars, so a small (preferably metallic) clutch provides an appropriate hint of femininity. Don’t want to be carrying it in your hand all night? Then go for one with a removable chain strap to ensure comfort!

Something sequined
Okay, some might not necessarily classify this as a staple item per se, but I think every girl needs to hae a little something sequin in her wardrobe. Whether it’s a blazer, a skirt or even a skimpy chemise, a pop of sequin once in a while is a fun way to add instant glamor to your look.
