I just wanted to mention that a way I can afford to travel abroad is to rent a budget timeshare (I use http://www.redweek.com) with several fellow students. They are cheaper than hotels and have more space and more privacy than guesthouses or hostels. Splitting the cost brings the rate way down, and we've been able to visit Spain, Portugal and France this way. This is a fun article to read, and I enjoyed it.
