Successor eyed for Clinton’s Senate seat
President-elect Barack Obama announced Monday that Hillary Clinton will succeed Condoleezza Rice as secretary of state in his administration. Obama’s one-time rival in the Democratic presidential primary season, Clinton has served as the junior senator from New York for eight years, and now speculation surrounds the options for her successor. David Paterson, the Democratic governor of New York, will choose her replacement, who will serve until a special election is held in Nov. 2010.
Among those rumored to be on the list of potential replacements are Clinton’s husband, former President Bill Clinton, several New York congressmen, New York Attorney General Andrew Cuomo, Buffalo Mayor Byron Brown and other local officials. Paterson has expressed his preference to appoint a representative from a minority. (Kelly Fahy and Lauren Olens)

Pirates attack American cruise ship
An American cruise liner escaped an attack by Somali pirates in the Gulf of Aden on Sunday. With more than 1,000 people on board, a successful attack could have led to an international crisis. When the pirates fired at the ship, the captain increased the ship’s speed to flee from the attack and continued toward the ship’s destination. The ship arrived at the Port of Salalah in Oman Monday with no injuries or notable damage. Although the International Maritime Bureau is concerned about the issue, the Somali government does not have a functioning system to enforce laws forbidding the pirates from violent activities. The American government is leading an international initiative to secure the area with international warships. (Kelly Fahy and Lauren Olens)
