SU Treasury votes to bring Garry Kasparov to campus
Student Union Treasury voted to allocate $49,800 to bring Garry Kasparov to campus at its weekly meeting on Tuesday.
Pending final contracts being signed, Kasparov will be coming to campus in April.
The vote in favor of funding the chess grandmaster, political activist and writer was 15-1-1, with Treasury members debating whether the event, sponsored by the Chess Club and supported by various campus organizations including the Gephardt Institute and Delta Sigma Pi, was worth draining most of the group’s remaining budget for the year. The allocation leaves about $13,000 in Treasury’s appeals account.

When will SU ever learn that we don’t want you to spend all our money on speakers! Please tell me how an hour or two at most of a man/woman speaking to a group of students who are able to attend will impact the campus….and be worth these ridiculous amounts of money.
If anything, treasury is only considering the image of Wash U when they make these decisions. “Oh, let’s bring Al Gore to campus and spend a 100k doing it so pre-frosh will be drawn to a school with such big-name speakers!”
Thanks SU once again for disappointing…..
Some people claim that fishecr was stronger than gary, but he never left his self-imposed exile to play gary. I remember gary’s answer on the larry king show in the 80s when he was asked why fishecr wouldn’t play him He knows where to find me, and he should ask me to play and i’ll play him . Fischer DID come back in 1992 to play spassky, but apart from 3 great games he was a shadow of his former glory years, whereas gary at the same age and even today regularly beats 2700+ players!
