Umm, Webster University’s president is not paid over 1 million dollars . . . I think Johns Hopkins, Emory and a bunch other are paid higher than Webster University . . . .

Chancellor Wrighton also thanked the Student Worker Alliance for reminding us all to treat our workers better, in his 2004 commencement address, and he apologized for sometimes forgetting that WashU is a community, with an obligation to look after its disadvantaged and disabled members (and its neighbors), in this 2008 commencement address. I have no reason to doubt his sincerity.

Keep on chanting “Wrighton is Wrong!” Of course he is wrong. That is part of his job, to be the one at whose desk the buck stops. When he is right, he ought to have his fair share of the credit.

Chancellor Wrighton volunteered to cut his own salary ten percent, setting an example for others to follow. Perhaps some have done so, privately. I hear, from reliable sources, that he is quite philanthropic with his money, in private. It is part of his job to take a lot of flak and listen patiently to critics of the University, and to DO something about it. I disagree with him on many issues but I think we all ought to give credit where it is due.

Chancellor Wrighton has done a lot for this school. His salary is not radically off the national average, especially if public university presidents are compared as well, and in general I just don’t have any problem with this. Whatever he’s making, it seems pretty likely that he could go to Wall Street or industry and make a lot more.

Will he still be the best when, after his unjust decision to impose a smoking ban, he continues enjoying his cigars in his university owned home in violation of said ban, while students are getting punished for doing the same outside?

All I know is that there’re pay freezes everywhere in the country, and WashU has been aggressively asking for alumni donation this year. You know what my reaction is after reading this article.

Chancellor Wrighton is one of the most amazing leaders this university has; he continues to build a culture that offers strong ethics, respect and excellence; no easy task. I know that other ivy school would love to have him as their leader and I sure hope that does NOT happen! oh by the way he also teaches actual classes; I totally admire and respect his leadership and dedication.
