With lessons from past, debate plans underway

After being selected to host the only vice presidential debate of the 2008 election cycle, Washington University continues to prepare the campus for the event in October. According to Rob Wild, assistant to the chancellor, the University has been preparing for the debate since the Commission on Presidential Debates (CPD) announced that the University would be the host last November. Former lecturer finds new paths after leaving WU

Former Washington University lecturer Jerome Bauer continues to be active in and around the campus community as he struggles through unemployment to make ends meet. Bauer left the University when his position as lecturer in the religious studies program was eliminated and replaced with a tenure-track position. (9) comments

Students remember Iraq War dead

Students participate in a moment of silence during a candlelight vigil on April 15. The Washington University Peace Coalition and Washington University's branch of Amnesty International hosted the vigil on the Swamp to commemorate the more than 4,000 American deaths that have occurred in the Iraq war. In anticipation of the expansive construction projects on the South 40 that are set to begin this summer, there will be an open student forum with administrators tomorrow at 7 p.m. in the Gregg Classroom on the South 40. Justin Carroll, dean of students, and Matt Malten, assistant vice chancellor for sustainability, will be at the forum to inform students about the upcoming plans and listen to students' feedback and suggestions. St. Louis's recent heavy rainfall may not bode well for the future, according to Bob Criss, a professor in Washington University's Department of Earth and Planetary Sciences. As of Thursday, April 10, the St. Louis area was at 190 percent normal precipitation for the year. (0) comments

Using medicine intended to reduce blood vessels, researchers at the Washington University School of Medicine have developed a non-invasive mechanism that can both shrink tumors and track their growth. The medicine, called fumagillin and developed by Research Assistant Professor of Medicine Patrick Winter with the help of the National Cancer Institute (NCI), is a particle-sized drug designed to destroy blood vessels around a tumor.
