Track teams shine in season's first outdoor meet

Coming off its third-place finish at the 2008 NCAA Division III Indoor Championship, the women's track and field team picked up right where it left off when it won the WU Twilight Meet at Bushyhead Track on Mar. 21. The men's squad captured second place in this first outdoor meet of the year for the teams.
The Lady Bears totaled 153 points to edge out second-place finisher Lincoln University's 142 points. On the men's side, the team's 131 points fell short of Missouri University of Science and Technology's tally of 201.
"It was a great meet for us to get our feet wet," said junior Tyler Mulkin. "We were able to see how everyone was doing and it was definitely a positive."
Junior Jessica Lane provisionally qualified for the NCAA Championships in the pole vault with her height 3.50 meters, which was good for third in the event at the meet.
The women's squad also posted impressive times in the 3,000-meter run, despite weather conditions. Mulkin took second place with a time of 10:40.58, while fellow classmate Lisa Sudmeier grabbed third in 10:40.74.
"It was a little windy out there," said Mulkin. "It affected us a little bit but we're not too disappointed with our times."
Junior Danielle Wadlington posted a time of 1:05.11 in the 400-meter hurdles for second place in the event. On the field, junior Aubrey Edwards finished third in the discus throw with her distance of 39.78.
A host of Bears won events for the men's squad. Junior Tanner Coghill took first in the 400-meter hurdles with his time of 54.77. The hurdler was 0.27 short of provisionally qualifying for the NCAA Championships.
Senior Matt Amantea won the long jump with a distance of 6.57 meters, while sophomore Keith England grabbed top honors in the javelin throw with his toss of 55.35 meters. On the track, freshman Dave Spandorfer took first in the 3,000-meter run with a time of 9:01.71.
"The men's team did especially well," said Mulkin. "It was a great way for them to prepare for the competition that's coming up."
The team continues the outdoor season with the Washington University Invitational Meet on Thursday, Mar. 27. The three-day event will be held at Bushyhead Track.
"We're really looking forward to this weekend's invitational," said Mulkin. "There's going to be some stiff competition, but we're just going to go out there and post the best marks we can."
