Like many a Wash. U. undergraduate, I have recently become addicted to the set of anonymous Facebook pages like “Wash U Confessions” and “Wash U Admirers” that purportedly detail the unspoken thoughts of students around campus.

I’ve been a vegetarian since my senior year of high school. But I hadn’t really examined why I became a vegetarian in a long time. I have canned answers I give curious murder-mongers, but they’re generally terse statements of ideology. After thinking about it, I’ve decided that the logical, consistent step is to become vegan.

Tuesday witnessed something of a miracle: the rebirth of a political career. Everyone on this campus has heard of the Sigma Alpha Epsilon racial slur incident in Bear’s Den Tuesday night by now. The scandal has dominated student conversations and Student Life headlines for the past week, and everyone on campus seems to have an opinion on what really happened and what should be done.

By this point everyone who doesn’t live under a rock without any WUFI—which, admittedly, may be several people—has heard of the racial episode involving Sigma Alpha Epsilon pledges last Tuesday night that rapidly exploded into the biggest campus-wide controversy that I, as a senior, have ever seen. It outweighs outrage at attempts to bring Bristol Palin to Wash. U.

Of the recent debates about reducing gun violence in the wake the tragedy in Newtown, Conn., no measure has received more universal support than stricter controls for the purchase of weapons by the mentally ill, particularly through the creation of a national mental health registry. It’s pretty hard to argue against.

After all, College Magazine just ranked Wash. U. as the third-best university in the country to find a husband, right behind Brigham Young University and the U.S. Military Academy. No mention of Wash.
