Dear Editor,
The article, “Printing Problems on Campus” (Student Life, Nov. 21) gives me the impression that printing on campus is near impossible.
However, in my time at Wash. U., I’ve found printing to be only the occasional hassle. Sure, I’ve encountered many times when a residential college printer ran out of toner or paper. At first, I just left the lab in a huff. Then I started to submit trouble tickets and even preempt the problem. I haven’t had a major problem since.
Regarding the printers in the CEC, I really do not understand the complaints raised. The CEC is the place to go for reliable printing. Your issue seems to be that you don’t keep track of your print offs, which is a personal problem.
Regarding your solutions, I must say that they just would not work. Paper and toner are expensive, and for students who must print off lecture slides, using a personal printer would quickly become very pricey.
Your vision of a land of free paper, toner and always working printers will, sadly, never be. The current system is very good, but there is room for improvement. Instead of attempting to replace the system, you could simply talk to STS and tell them to be more vigilant about keeping the printers running.
