Letter to the Editor: Scientology isn’t a human rights organization

Sam Klein | Class of 2018

On Monday, March 27, Student Life ran a story, placed prominently on its website and print edition, stating that a “human rights group” condemned Washington University’s use of electroconvulsive therapy as a last-resort treatment for severe depression. That “human rights group” is a well-known front for the Church of Scientology, an organization that condemns the entire discipline of psychiatry in favor of its own slightly less robust practice of “dianetics.” This “human rights group” is also known to make defectors disappear.

By promoting the contents of the press release without doing basic due diligence or asking anyone from the University for comment, Student Life promotes pseudoscience and gives a soapbox to a group that shouldn’t have one in a university newspaper.
