You're referring to the "Florida Tomato Growers Exchange," I assume? The FTGE and CIW are definitely on opposite sides of this issue, so that is a good way to see both sides. Frankly I'm not sure how we're supposed to say who's right from up here in St. Louis, though, so hopefully Bon Appetit has done more research on this than the average WashU student.

I'm pretty sure Bon Appetit brings in tomatoes from Florida, not Mexico though, given the company's focus on keeping foods relatively "local." Which probably explains why we aren't getting tomatoes from other sources during the interim.

If you read into those labor instances that the department of justice prosecuted they were not the Tomato farms that were enslaving the workers, it was the people that housed them and brought them to work everyday. Most of which were former immigrants themselves that decided it was easier to take advantage of other immigrants and steal their money than it was to pick their own tomatoes or work for themselves. If you want to have an informed opinion about both sides of the issue read the Florida Tomato Growers Coalition website. Make up your own mind about whether or not you want to eat Tomatoes anymore. Which tomatoes shipped to the St. Louis area typically come from Mexico during the winter not Florida. Try looking at their practices.
