Letter to the Editor
Andrew S. Jackson | Systems Manager, Division of Biology
Dear Editor,
I just read Peter Murrey’s piece in Student Life (“Concerned about the new trustees,” Aug. 28) and wanted to thank you for speaking up on the matter. It’s important that students remain active and vocal in their critique of administrative policy. The Aug. 24 Forum article in question (“Recent trustee appointments demonstrate University’s perspective on energy”) by Kate Gaertner was disturbing on many levels. To suggest that “idealism will have to be found elsewhere” speaks volumes about the intellectual climate in the editorial board.

When I first read Kate Gaertner’s article, I could not believe she was serious. I thought the last line, the often quoted ‘idealism will have to be found elsewhere” was ironic. It certainly comes off that way.
After reading “An open letter to professor Jeff Smith” (9/4/09) I conclude that the Student Life editorial board is developing an ironic sense of humor. Perhaps this signals a change of heart and the dawn of a new consciousness.
Why don’t we change our name to Peabody University? Why don’t we rename University City, Clayton, and Skinker-DeBaliviere “Coal Town”?
Lecturer Dr. Jerome Bauer (NOT “Former Lecturer,” thank you very much, Student Life)
