The hunt
Finding a place to live is never an easy task. Some freshmen would even say it is a quite daunting endeavor. There are so many options and possibilities, so many factors to take into account, and always hanging above us like the sword of Damocles is the possibility that we might get stuck who knows where with who knows who.
As rising sophomores, many questions arise as to where to live next year. The easiest choice, of course, is to move into one’s residential college. That way, the chances of ending up homeless are pretty slim. However, several issues arise from this system.
For instance, what if your ResCollege only has four-person suites, but you have more than four friends that you want to live with? Do you all give up on living together, or do you risk trying to get into a dorm outside of your ResCollege?
There is also the issue of new versus traditional dorms. For someone living in a new dorm, the idea of moving into a traditional dorm might be unwelcome, although sophomore traditional dorms are still very nice. Of course, it is actually probably easier for a student living in a new dorm to remain in a new dorm. Unfortunately, the same cannot be said for students living in traditional dorms who want to try something different next year.
Also take into account the fact that with the rising cost of housing, some students might find it more financially feasible to live in a traditional dorm next year. However, their chances of doing so successfully, while still living with whomever they want, may not be so high.
Finding suites that can fit all your friends can also make things complicated. What if you have an uneven number of people? Do you try to find someone else to try to make it even?
But do not worry, there is hope. With many students rushing, or even choosing the BLOC housing system in the Village, there will be a good opportunity for everyone to get into dorms outside of their ResCollege if they so desire.
Furthermore, we must give credit to ResLife for trying to accommodate the wishes of all students. And so, to those planning to try to get housing in dorms outside of their ResCollege, I would advise not be too picky and to be open to all possibilities. ResLife will do their best to keep us with our chosen roommates. After all, what matters is not just where we live so much as with whom we reside!
