Student Union Treasury voted to allocate $105,569 to bring musician John Legend, actress Sofia Vergara and law professor Amy Chua to campus in a meeting flooded by over 100 students Tuesday night.

Seven appeals were not funded, including ones for Sanjay Gupta, Garry Kasparov and Ashley Judd. SU Treasury also rejected appeals for Djimon Hounsou, Chris Gardner, Patch Adams and Bill McKibben.

The allocations leave SU Treasury with about $87,000 to fund student group appeals for the rest of the year.

Treasury representatives and members of the different groups waited until around 3 a.m. for the final decisions to be made. Emotions ran high as student groups stayed well past midnight to voice support for their own appeals and other speakers they also hoped to see funded.

The vote to fund the Association of Black Students’ appeal for Legend was unanimous. After extended debate, Chess Club’s appeal to bring Kasparov failed by one vote.

“I think chess still carries a stigma even at the university level,” said junior Jacob Zax, president of Chess Club. “I think it would’ve been good for Student Union to have a speaker like this… and it’s too bad it didn’t happen.”

The initial process to choose speakers was to combine speakers into packages and having Treasurers choose packages. Over 30 packages of various combination of speakers were nominated by Treasurers and several rounds of voting were conducted in order to narrow down the list.

Ashoka’s request for $50,000 to bring Gupta to campus was rejected in the first round of voting.

Ashoka members felt that Gupta’s similarity to Dr. Joia Mukherjee (who was funded last week) hurt their cause.

“It’s almost a pick of the draw whether the small speakers go first or the big speakers go first. We just never got a say. We think Sanjay Gupta would have brought something different to the table and have a lot more name recognition,” said Ajay Kanakamedala, Ashoka’s treasurer.

As the number of packages was narrowed down through several rounds of voting, Treasury members still failed to arrived at a consensus, even with two packages remaining. Several attempts were made very late in the process to add new speakers to existing packages, or to add entirely new packages. The decision was then ultimately made to vote separately on Legend and Kasparov, both speakers with price tags of over $50,000.

Association of Latin American Students’ appeal for Vergara and Lunar New Year Festival’s appeal for Chua both made it through on individual votes. LNYF had been earlier eliminated in the packaging system but found new life when considered separately.

“I think the whole system with packaging made things really complicated. I almost left because I thought she was out,” said Rina Matsumoto, co-executive director of LNYF. “Amy Chua addresses a lot of issues not covered by the other speakers. She is a superstar because of her issues, not because of her name.”

Beyond procedural complaints, some students said they appreciated the support they received from students outside their organizations.

“The solidarity of other groups who maybe didn’t receive what they wanted–and being mature and standing up for others who they believed deserved the chance–was impressive,” said Zachary Romo, outreach chair for ALAS.

Dates for most of the speakers have yet to be set, though John Legend is planned for the spring semester.

SU Treasury allocated funding for Al Gore, Daphne Kwok, Mukherjee, Deanne Bell, and Jess Weiner last week.

The Bears defeated CNU in straight sets on Saturday.

Facing a 16-20 deficit in the second set against No. 6 Christopher Newport University (CNU), Washington University women’s volleyball head coach Rich Luenemann called a timeout and asked his team for some focus.

From there, the Bears took over the match and ended the set the way they ended every set of the weekend—with a victory.

“The whole time throughout the match, we always expected to win,” junior Kelly Pang said. “There were no doubts in our minds.”

Behind an incredible 82 digs from the team’s back row, the No. 2 Bears rallied in the set and went on to beat CNU 3-0 (25-17, 25-23, 25-20) to finish off a 4-0 weekend and win the WU/Asics National Invitational.

“I’m really proud of us as a team,” Pang, who registered 30 digs in the final match, said. “This is obviously a higher field of competition this weekend and I’m glad how we responded, and I think it says a lot, especially when we were down at times and were able to come back.”

The win came hours after a 3-0 (25-18, 25-20, 25-11) victory over No. 20 University of Wisconsin-Whitewater, and the day after 3-0 wins against Ohio Northern University (25-14, 25-15, 25-19) and No. 8 Carthage College (25-13, 25-21, 25-20).

Facing three ranked teams, Wash. U. swept the tournament without dropping a set for the second straight year.

“We came in, and we competed, and at times we took them out of their play,” Luenemann said. “We were in our system and they were not in their system.”

Against CNU, the team weathered some struggles and a .191 hitting percentage to push its season record to 10-0. Senior Lauren Budde led the way up front for the Bears, recording 12 kills, and sophomore Meghan Byrne followed her with 10. With sophomore outside hitters Megan Odenthal and Tessa Blood out with injuries, freshman Lindsay Juriga stepped in and tallied eight kills.

“Lindsay was awesome,” junior Drew Hargrave said. “She really had to step up this weekend…and I thought her hitting was amazing. She never gets frazzled as a freshman.”

However, the defensive players were the heroes in the match. Senior Tricia Brandt picked up 17 digs, Budde had 11 and every Wash. U. player in the match dug at least one ball.

Earlier in the day, the team made quick work of Whitewater, as Budde again took control by hitting 14 for 18 (.778) with no errors. Hargrave matched Budde’s 14 kills as well.

On Friday, the Bears opened up the tournament without much difficulty against Ohio Northern. Budde (15 kills) and Hargrave (11) again paced the team offensively, and junior Marilee Fisher’s 38 assists were a high for her on the weekend. Brandt’s 15 digs were a team high on the match.

Sophomore Kaia Schwartz put forth a strong effort, with four kills (.400 percentage) and four total blocks.

Friday’s late match was the fourth time Wash. U. and Carthage had squared off since November of 2009, and all four times Carthage was ranked 13th or higher and was in the top 10 three times. But this match had the same result as the previous three, as the Bears won without allowing a set to the Lady Reds. The match was similar to Saturday’s final game; the team hit a season-low .186, but the defense, whose 62 digs were a season high before Saturday, carried the team.

Budde, who had double-digit kills in every match and ended with 54 total for the tournament, was named to the all-tournament team with Hargrave, who had 40 kills of her own and Pang, who had 62 digs.

With its usual suspects performing at high levels, the team is optimistic about the season so far.

“I think we’re playing a lot better than we did last season at this point,” Hargrave said. “I’m just really excited about where we are.”

The Bears head to Colorado to face three more ranked schools, beginning with old rival No. 9 Juniata College on Friday evening at 5:00 p.m. MDT. Wash. U. has won three straight against Juniata, including a come-from-behind 3-2 victory on the same weekend last year.

“The greatest war in the history of volleyball: Juniata and Washington University. The most storied rivalry in Division III volleyball,” Luenemann said. “Both teams are gonna come out, both guns a-blazin’.”

Godiva Reisenbichler | Student Life
I pretty much say the same thing in every first piece of the year I’ve ever written for this newspaper, which is, “Welcome back!”

So without further ado, welcome back sophomores, juniors and seniors. Freshmen, welcome to college. I will trade places with you. Please, seek me out and we’ll change names and everything. I just want to have four more years of this. If there’s one piece of advice I’ll give you, it’s to not take advice from me. But if you choose to ignore that suggestion, take full advantage of everything. Say no to nothing. (Except drugs. Drugs are bad.)

That’s the best part about college. Every door is open, and your parents aren’t there to tell you to go to your room and do your chemistry homework (Pre-meds will soon find that they will be telling themselves to do that). As a freshman, you may not always feel like the coolest kid on the block because, well, you aren’t. But that’s OK. You have so much to look forward to, and as someone who’s nearing the end of his college career, I am supremely jealous.

In some ways I feel like a freshman this coming semester. I have not been at school since December, thanks to a lovely vacation in Florence. Oh, excuse me, I meant a lovely semester abroad. One more piece of advice: study abroad. The only negative is that I got so spoiled, I now have a really hard time eating Italian food. Otherwise, it feels fresh returning to St. Louis, taking in all it has to offer (BBQ and Budweiser), writing for Forum again, hanging out with friends I haven’t seen in almost a year, using my brain… It’s all very exciting.

What’s great is that a new year is also, in a way, a fresh start. A nice clean ball of Silly Putty that’s yours to mold, until you drop it in the puke in some corner of the first party you go to. What I like to do at the beginning of each year is set goals that I will ultimately fail to meet. So, in my wizened year as a senior, I decided to make my goals very, very achievable.

These are goals that we, as a collective student body, can be confident that we will reach together and can later celebrate accomplishing. This year, I pledge to do the following: eat (not in any specific manner, healthily, less, more, better food, nothing like that), just to eat. I pledge to try and sleep in my own bed, but I can’t make any promises. I will go to class at least once. And now for the shocker—I will brush my teeth EVERY (yes, you read that right, EVERY) night. Whoa. I just needed to gather myself after that shocker. Try the same. Make some goals (easy or otherwise), enjoy yourselves, and experience what you have.

So now, stop reading my article; you’re at college. Go do something fun.

Students returning to Washington University this fall will find a number of changes on campus, due to both completed and ongoing construction projects. One new building, Green Hall, is almost complete. Renovation projects have been completed on several buildings, and the University has started to renovate Umrath Hall.

Umrath Hall
Umrath Hall, which is located adjacent to the Mallinckrodt Center, usually houses the Campus Y, the undergraduate deans, and the Undergraduate Research Office. It will be under renovation for most of the 2011-2012 school year.
According to Art Ackermann, associate vice chancellor for Facilities Planning & Management, Umrath was originally built as a dormitory. The university is renovating it to make the rooms more suitable to serve as office space and classrooms.
The renovations to Umrath have been especially complex because the roof had to be removed to reconstruct the building in a more stable way.
According to Ackermann, most of the heavy demolition was completed over the summer, so the project is mostly contained.
The offices usually housed in Umrath have been moved to other buildings on campus.
The renovations to Umrath Hall will not be finished until the end of the school year and move-in to the building is currently scheduled to take place after graduation.

Green Hall
Despite a delay on stonework that was caused by a mason’s strike this summer, Green Hall will be completed in time for its dedication on Sept. 23.
Although the exterior of the new building will not be complete for another two to three weeks, move-in started this week.
Green Hall, which is the newest addition to campus, is located on the northeast corner of campus. It will provide space for the Department of Electrical & Systems Engineering and house the International Center for Advanced Renewable Energy and Sustainability (I-CARES).

Cupples II
The University completed construction on Cupples II this summer. The building now features a completely renovated interior and will house the College of Arts and Sciences, the Graduate School of Arts and Sciences and the Office of Undergraduate Research.
According to Ackermann, the original space, which was about 100 years old, was not well suited to classroom space.
“We tried to make the building as functional for modern education as possible, given the fact that it is a hundred-year-old building,” said Ackermann.
The third floor of Cupples II now has a wide hallway with natural light and strip lighting that will allow students to showcase posters or art.

Mallinckrodt
Due to renovations, the Mallinckrodt Center now has a new entrance. It also boasts new Subway and Bank of America locations. The newly renovated Campus bookstore is still located on the building’s ground floor, and three classrooms are now on the second floor.
“I’m particularly excited to see how people will receive Mallinckrodt because it’s pretty interesting, the changes there,” Ackermann said. “We’re anxious always to get some feedback on what we did.”
Ackermann says he hopes that students will take the time to check out the completed renovations.
Louderman 458 also received a complete makeover.

Dunn was killed in a bus accident on Friday.

Emily Dunn, 23, dedicated herself to the Washington University community as a student, and when she graduated in May, she had a bright future at SuperFly Presents, an event production company which would enable her to work in a sector she felt passionate about: the music industry.

Her vibrant life was cut short on Friday when she was struck by a bus in San Francisco, the city in which she was working.

Dunn contributed to many facets of the University community. She was a Danforth Scholar, an executive on Team 31 and a member of the Burning Kumquat.

She is fondly remembered by those who knew her.

“Emily was an amazing person with a bubbling personality, a vibrant spirit and a contagious smile. She touched so many people during her time at Washington University and she will be missed by so many of us. Emily was smart, passionate, driven and involved in so many facets of the Wash. U. community. We’ll all remember that upbeat and fun-loving attitude that she brought to Team 31,” Alex Levitt, a junior and the president of Team 31, said.

Dunn was a religious studies and environmental science major who graduated with honors. In addition to building strong friendships with her fellow students, Dunn was able to enjoy relationships with members of the faculty as well.

“Emily possessed a love for life and an enthusiasm for everything that is best described with the French phrase, ‘joie de vivre.’ When I picture Emily in my mind’s eye, I see her throwing a frisbee across the lawn outside the dining hall at Camp Miniwanca; I see her with a big smile on her face and her glasses perched on the top of her head. I also see her watching, listening and considering when part of a group but always in motion even when she was sitting still. And I can hear her voice with its tenor of passion for everything that mattered to her,” Sharon Stahl, the associate vice chancellor for students and dean of the First Year Center who worked closely with Danforth Scholars, wrote in a letter to members of the program.

Levitt, along with Amanda Sabele and Laura April, also members of Team 31, are collecting pictures of Emily and letters to her in a book, called Emily’s Book, from any student, graduate or faculty member who wants to contribute. The completed book will be presented to the Dunn family.

Materials for Emily’s Book can be sent to emilysbook11@gmail.com or can be dropped off with Kiersten Shinrock in Room 263 of the Danforth University Center before Sept. 2.

A memorial service will be held Saturday in her hometown of Atlanta, Georgia. A scholarship, The Emily Dunn Memorial Fund, has been named in her honor. It will be used to facilitate International Gap Year studies.

W.I.L.D., or Walk In Lay Down, a concert that takes place once a semester, is earlier this year than in the past. The fall concert has been in October every year since 2007, when it was scheduled for September 29.

Past W.I.L.D. headliners include Edward Sharpe and the Magnetic Zeros, Wale, Major Lazer, the Cold War Kids and the Black Keys.

Team 31, the group that organizes W.I.L.D., will announce the headliner at CPC happy hour on September 1.

This year, the concert will be on the same day as Balloon Glow, a St. Louis tradition that brings hundreds of people to Forest Park to watch 70 hot air balloons inflate in preparation for the Great Balloon Race the next day.

Sophomore Stephen Bonser threw a no-hitter in the second game of a double-header against Fontebonne University on Sunday. Bonser had a perfect game through five innings, but it was broken up by a fielding error in the sixth.

Sophomore Stephen Bonser and the Washington University baseball team ended the season on a high note, as the Bears swept a doubleheader with rival Fontbonne University behind superb pitching outings.

Bonser threw a no-hitter in the second game and was an error away from a perfect game. In seven innings of work, Bonser struck out nine to earn his sixth win of the season. Freshman Kyle Billig’s fielding error in the sixth inning broke up the perfect game.

The Red and Green bats recorded 12 hits, led by junior Brandon Rogalski’s two-for-three effort which included four RBIs and his sixth home run of the season, en route
to its 8-0 victory in game two.

Wash. U. opened the day with a 4-0 win thanks to senior Adam Merzel’s four-hit shutout and some timely hitting.

Merzel earned his sixth win of the season with seven strikeouts over seven innings pitched.

Senior Travis May scored twice and drove home the other two with a one-out single to right field that was part of a three-run sixth inning that broke open the game.

The Bears closed out the regular season as the sixth-ranked team in the NCAA Division III Central Region with a record of 29-17. Wash. U. must now wait until May 16 to find out if they earned an at-large bid to the 2011 NCAA Division III Tournament.

A resident of the Thomas Eliot House reported the burglary of a laptop from an unlocked dorm room on Friday.

The computer went missing from between 11:30 a.m. and 1 p.m.

This is the second such burglary to happen this month. On April 13, a resident of Millbrook reported the theft of his computer and notebook while his apartment was empty. The door to the apartment had been left unlocked according to WUPD.

No one was harmed in either apartment, and there was no evidence of forced entry.

A former student was arrested in conjunction with the Millbrook burglary.

WUPD Chief Don Strom said that in light of the incidents, students should exercise caution.

“We want to make sure the word gets out to people to lock their doors and report suspicious activities,” Strom said.
