St. Louis International Film Festival opens today, runs through Nov. 11
The 27th annual St. Louis International Film Festival (SLIFF) opens today, Nov. 1, and runs through Nov. 11. The festival shows film exclusives from around the world at venues around the St. Louis area, including Washington University and the Tivoli Theatre.
The first film to show is “Destroyer” at the Tivoli at 8 p.m. This feature film is a modern noir thriller directed by St. Louis native Karyn Kusama. Natalie Portman is unrecognizable in her role as Los Angeles Police Department detective Erin Bell, who reckons with the consequences of an undercover mission from her early years on the force when an unexpected figure from her past re-emerges.
Other great feature-length selections showing at the festival include “Ask for Jane” (Nov. 11), “Black Mexicans” (Nov. 3 and Nov. 5), “Ash is Purest White” (Nov. 8), “Capernaum” (Nov. 11) and “Rafiki” (Nov. 3 and Nov. 5).
The festival is also hosting screenings of a vast collection of documentaries and shorts. All festival selections are available for browsing on cinemastlouis.org.
Tickets for films, excluding a minimal selection of special events and musically-accompanied films, cost $10 for students with a University ID. For avid festival goers, festival punch-passes for $70 to see 6 movies or $110 to see 10 movies are available. And for the most eager film nerds, a festival all-access VIP pass is available for $400 that allows entrance to all SLIFF events, including special events, with a plus-one.
There will also be 65 free SLIFF programs, many of which will be hosted at Washington University. Nov. 2-4 and Nov. 9-11, Wash. U. will be hosting screenings of documentaries spotlighting human rights issues around the world in the Brown School of Social Work.
