Bears receive at-large bid to NCAA tournament

The defending national champions have reached the postseason for the 22nd straight season. The No. 12 Washington University women’s basketball team will face No. 10 Denison University in the opening round of the 2011 Division III NCAA Women’s Basketball Championship tournament on Friday night in Holland, Mich., as announced Monday by the NCAA Selection Committee.

Getting to know Grandmaster Hikaru Nakamura

Hikaru Nakamura, the No. 1 chess player in the U.S. and No. 10 player in the world according to the World Chess Federation rankings, came to College Hall on Saturday to share his love of chess with the Washington University community and take on 42 players concurrently under a simul format. He won all 42 games with ease.

Police make arrest for Melville robbery

University City Police have arrested and charged Bryant N. Taylor for the robbery of sophomore Eric Tsai on Sunday evening. Taylor, 20, who lives on the 7700 block of Folk Avenue, has been charged with 2nd degree robbery in connection to the mugging of Tsai and sophomore Aaron Belkin on the 500 block of Melville Avenue around 7:50 p.m. Sunday.

Students mugged near Loop; friend helps them capture assailants

Two students were mugged at the corner of Waterman and Melville avenues Sunday evening but helped police arrest two of their assailants after a friend came to their aid. Sophomore Aaron Belkin said he and classmate Eric Tsai were mugged by four assailants as they were walking toward the Delmar Loop.

University to reopen Wednesday morning

Washington University will reopen at 10 a.m. Wednesday after closing on Monday afternoon in anticipation of severe winter weather in the region. The School of Medicine, which did not close for the storm, will open at its usual time.

University to remain closed through Tuesday

Washington University, with the exception of the School of Medicine, will remain closed through Feb. 1 in response to the severe weather threatening the area. All non-essential services on the Danforth, North, South, West and Tyson campuses will be suspended, including classes. Essential services, which include the Washington University Police Department, Dining Services and certain personnel in Facilities Planning and Management, will remain operational. The medical school remains open. Per University policy, individual employees must decide for themselves whether it’s safe to travel to and from work.

University to close at 3 p.m. Monday because of winter storm

Washington University, with the exception of the School of Medicine, will close at 3 p.m. on Monday, the administration announced. All non-essential services on the Danforth, North, South, West and Tyson campuses will be suspended. Essential services, which include the Washington University Police Department, Dining Services and certain personnel in Facilities Planning and Management will remain operational. It is unclear whether the University will close any or all services on Feb. 1 in response to the severe weather. Closures will be announced on a daily basis on the University website and through the usual communication channels.

Einstein Bros. opens in Simon

The Einstein Bros. Bagels franchise in Simon Hall is scheduled to open at 8:15 a.m. according to a news release from Brian Bannister, associate dean for finance and administration of the Olin Business School.
