Overtime victory clinches spot in national championship game

The No. 6 Washington University women’s basketball team has some unfinished business after punching its ticket to the national championship game at 2 p.m. on Saturday with an 86-75 overtime victory over No. 1 Amherst College. The Bears face No. 4 Hope College for the national title. It was a game with three different stories.

Softball unseated in UAA championships

From 2004 to 2009, the Washington University softball team was synonymous with University Athletic Association conference champion. The Bears had won the championship six years in a row. One too many losses has ended that streak, as Wash. U. tied with Brandeis University for second with a 5-3 conference record.

Wash. U. organizes women’s basketball fan bus

Washington University students can sign up for a free road trip to Bloomington, Ill., to cheer on the No. 6 women’s basketball team at the NCAA Division III national semifinals against the top-ranked and undefeated Lord Jeffs of Amherst College on Friday. The Lord Jeffs are carrying a 31-game winning streak into the semifinals.

Softball starts season with sweep

Giving up five runs in one inning might spell doom for many teams. But the Washington University softball team kept their composure and blasted open the eighth inning with five runs to defeat host Rhodes College 12-9 in Saturday’s nightcap at the Chick-fil-A Classic in Memphis, Tenn.

Student group prepares an on-campus triathlon

Women’s tennis: Bears unable to complete upset

Washington University’s women’s tennis team will have to wait for another shot at DePauw University after falling 5-4 on Saturday. The No. 11 Tigers are a familiar foe for the No. 15 Bears as they knocked out Wash. U. by the same score in the second round of the NCAA Tournament last year. Residents of Nemerov and Dardick Houses should start hearing the crack of bats and the thwack of leather as the Washington University softball season begins. The Bears enter the season ranked 7th by the National Fastpitch Coaches Association. “It’s reflective of what other coaches in the country think of our program,” Coach Leticia Pineda-Boute.

Women’s basketball: Bears play great defense, sweep weekend on road

Washington University’s women’s basketball team may be known for its many offensive threats, but it was their defensive efforts that punctuated this weekend’s sweep. The Bears (20-2, 10-1 UAA) defeated New York University 58-50 on Sunday and Brandeis Univesity 50-37 on Friday to maintain their one-game lead in the University Athletic Association standings over the University of Chicago.

MBA students bring Olympics to Wash. U.

Vancouver may be all abuzz with Winter Olympics fever, but some students at Washington University plan to bring the Olympic spirit to St. Louis. On Thursday, the Olin Marketing Association (OMA) began a series of programs dubbed the “OLINpics.” OMA is a career club for MBA students whose membership contains 40 percent of the full-time MBA student body.

Then-sophomore Michael Burnstein runs in the Washington University Early Bird Meet on Sept. 5, 2009. Burnstein won the men’s individual UAA cross country title on Oct. 30.
