A crisis is unfolding in Sudan, and it is getting worse. Almost two years ago, the Sudanese government began responding to a rebellion in the western Darfur region by attacking the civilian population of the region on a massive scale. They created and armed militias known as the “janjaweed,” who have pursued a campaign of rape, murder and ethnic cleansing, enjoying air support from government warplanes.
On April 7 2004, 10 years will have passed since the beginning of the genocidal campaign that claimed the lives of almost a million people in Rwanda. This anniversary provides an opportunity to remember and reflect on the terrible events that took place; for many of us, it is an opportunity to discover what happened for the first time, as it has not gained the same prominence in popular culture that Somalia or Bosnia have.
