The men’s and women’s swim teams both had banner weekends in the Washington University Thanksgiving Invitational. The women’s team took first place honors in a field of six teams and the men’s squad scored second out of seven teams. On the women’s side sophomore Tracey Hendrickson took home first place honors in the 500-yard Freestyle and the 200-yard Butterfly.
Behind a raucous crowd of 1,087 fans, the Bears shut down the No. 5 Ohio Northern University attack Saturday night, winning 30-28, 28-30, 30-27, 30-18 to earn a trip to another Final Four.
The win marks the volleyball team’s third Final Four appearance in four years and the 12th in the history of Washington University.
“The consistency this team has shown over the last four years is amazing,” said coach Rich Luenemann.
Down 13-14 in the fifth game to Wartburg University last Saturday night, the Washington University volleyball team was in danger of making another early exit from the NCAA tournament. But senior Katie Quinn had different ideas.
She ripped one of her season-high 25 kills through the Knights defense, tying the game. Then, with the Bears clinging to a 16-15 lead, Quinn, along with sophomore setter Kara Liefer, sealed the come-from-behind victory with a block on Wartburg’s Dia Dohlman.
Sports owners need to take a chill pill. Pop a Paxil. Recite the alphabet backwards. Because their hot-headed, ill-informed moves are ruining sports. For awhile, seeing sports owners wreck formerly reputable franchises was amusing. The story would go something like this.
Last weekend, sophomores Eric Triebe and Mike Slavik continued to shine for the Bears’ swimming and diving team. At the Truman State Invitational, Triebe registered a first place finish in the 50-yard free, coming across the line in 22.18. Triebe also placed second in the 100 -yard breaststroke with a time of 1:01.
Last weekend, the Bears took 17 of 26 events en route to a sweep of DePauw University. On the women’s side, sophomore Tracey Hendrickson and junior Brianna Krull each won two events as the Bears won 165-78. Senior captain James Prescott and sophomore Eric Triebe also won a pair of events as the men posted a 135-101 win.
The Washington University volleyball team extended its winning streak to a season-high 15 matches Oct. 22 at the Field House, knocking off Southern Illinois University-Edwardsville in three sets. With the win, the No. 2-ranked Bears, who have not lost in over a month, upped their record to 25-3 on the season.
This weekend, the Bears’ swimming team heads to Drury University for its second meet of the season. Junior Jessica Schneider said, “Drury will be a tough team as defending Division II National Champions. We want to go out there and give a good fight and swim hard like we did against SLU.
Men’s Soccer tied University Athletic Association (UAA) titan and No. 4-ranked Emory University this weekend. The tie marked the first blemish on the Golden Eagles’ record and another impressive shutout for Bears junior goalkeeper Colin Robinson. Sophomore midfielder Sam Jacobs said, “I think we were definitely playing for the win and we would have liked to come away with the win…while we were happy we didn’t lose we were looking for the win.
