I am graduating with a BA in Drama, acting emphasis. Translation: after four years and $160,000, I’m an actor. And despite what you may be thinking, I learned more from this major than I could have hoped to learn from any other. Lessons about life, about personal identity.
When you come across people you feel you can truly connect with-and you will-embrace those relationships. Many of those people will be the friends you can turn to for support as you reach the dizzying end of your college experience and step into the real world. And they’ll always be there with open arms and couches for you to crash on should you ever need a warm, safe place to call home.
Students at Washington University are overestimating their classmates’ sexual experience – at least according to this year’s Student Life sex survey.
In response to the aftermath of Hurricane Katrina, Washington University is providing financial aid to affected students and organizing a campus-wide fundraising initiative to benefit the American Red Cross. Students and practicing physicians at the University’s School of Medicine will also be providing healthcare services for evacuees of the disaster as they arrive in St. Louis throughout the week.
As of yesterday, over 200 students from schools affected by the disaster had inquired about taking classes at the University. Chancellor Mark Wrighton said the University estimates that it may enroll as many as 75 of these students.
“As you might imagine, if you were in the same circumstance, you’d be contacting more than one institution and trying to find the right place at the right time,” said Wrighton. “I think one of the important challenges for students wishing to come here is that we’re already underway with classes… If a student doesn’t become enrolled with us sometime this week, it’s very hard to catch up. It’s a pretty rigorous curriculum.”
For this reason, the University is urging interested students to make a decision promptly if they wish to attend. Wrighton noted that many institutions on the East Coast and in California don’t start classes until mid-September, which would be an easier transition for students who are not ready to make definitive plans.
Students who decide to attend classes at the University will be enrolled as ‘visiting students,’ enabling them to take night courses through University College as well as day courses offered through the University’s other colleges. Wrighton said that the University is trying to provide a setting for students who wish to continue their education, not trying to recruit them to transfer into the University’s degree programs.

Two minutes of silence can be incredibly powerful–and there was not a cough or shuffle to be heard when nearly 150 students, faculty and staff of the University were led in this show of respect and hope by Father Gary Braun Friday afternoon.
So began the volunteer meeting held in response to the aftermath of Hurricane Katrina.
Planning on avoiding Thursday night parties like the plague, studying dutifully on the weekends and making straight A’s your first semester in college? Ask yourself why. Not why you want good grades (half of the freshman class at WU every year intends on being pre-med, after all)-but why you need to study every night of the week to do it.
Washington University students aren’t the only students in the area who’ve been rallying for what they believe in-two different student groups at Saint Louis University are also protesting and petitioning for their causes.
One group is taking action against the administration of Saint Louis University (SLU) for a recently instated $50 graduation fee; the other hopes to commute the death sentence of a local man to life in prison without parole.
Washington University’s School of Medicine dropped one ranking to third in the nation in this year’s U.S. News & World Report rankings of graduate and professional programs, released on Friday.
The rankings also lowered the University’s law school from 20th to a tie for 24th with the University of Notre Dame, and moved the Olin School of Business MBA program up seven places to 32nd in the nation. The School of Engineering and Applied Science moved up two places to 34th in a tie with the University of Virginia, North Carolina State University and the Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute.
Students need not guess at this year’s Spring WILD headliner any longer. At Happy Hour yesterday Team 31 Productions announced the twice Grammy-nominated Robert Randolph and the Family Band as the main act for WILD on April 29 in Brookings Quadrangle. Sister Hazel will be one of two opening acts; the second opener will be announced next week.
Students will soon be able to download music the legal way-through a filesharing service contracted by the University. Student Union is looking into various services, and a vendor fair scheduled for April 7 will allow students to find out more about their options before weighing in on which filesharing service they prefer.
The votes will be used to determine which service the University ultimately contracts.
“It’s gone from the theoretical ‘would you use a music downloading service’ to ‘these are the different options, this is what it’s going to cost us, this is how we’re going to pay for it’… and we’ll get some feedback from there,” said Student Union (SU) President David Ader.
