Driving to the Hoop The Washington University basketball teams are off to a strong start. The men’s basketball team entered the season ranked 28th among all NCAA Division III colleges and 2nd overall in the University Athletic Association (UAA). And the women’s squad, just two years removed from their amazing run of four consecutive Division III national championship titles, began this season on a seven-game winning streak.
It’s not about getting a scholarship, getting drafted, or making SportsCenter-it’s a deep need in us that comes from the heart. We need to practice, to play, to lift, to hustle, to sweat. We do it all for our teammates and for the student in our calculus class that we don’t even know.

Okay, now to the five people that are continuing to read (because they are as sick of political whining and complaining as I am), I salute you. You have moved beyond the debate of who sucks more, Bush or Kerry.
Coach Rich Luenemann surprisingly had a huge smile on his face following the 3-0 defeat at the hands of first ranked Juniata College at the NCAA Division III National Championship match on Saturday in Rochester, Minnesota. Although his team had just failed to repeat as national champions, Luenemann couldn’t help but smile as he watched the players from Juniata celebrate on the other side of the court.
Swimmers take your mark: The Washington University swim team is already off to a spectacular start as the winter season gets under way. The Bears opened their season against Division I cross-town rival Saint Louis University with a dramatic 153-140 win.
Following a successful showing at Fontbonne University on Senior Night, the Bears squared off against Division II foe SIU-Edwardsville at Edwardsville, Ill. Despite a strong effort, the Bears fell 0-3, snapping their fourteen-game winning streak. The Bears fell behind early to the Cougars, who never looked back as they dropped the Bears to 20-5.
Jeff Novack MVP: Tim Duncan. He may be boring, but-well, he’s just boring. Rookie of the Year: Andres Nocioni. If you follow one Argentine NBA player this year, follow Manu Ginobili. But if you follow two, look for Andres Nocioni. If you follow three, consider NBA journeyman Ruben Wolkowyski.
The Bears Volleyball squad is off to a terrific beginning to another tremendous season. Currently, the Bears proudly sit ranked No. 4 in the nation. Under the guidance of Coach Rich Luenemann, the Bears have amassed a record of 176-25 during his five-year tenure as head coach of the volleyball squad and look to build on that record as the season progresses.
This weekend, the Washington University football team traveled to Chicago, Illinois, where they squared off against their University Athletic Association (UAA) rival University of Chicago. The Bears handily won their first UAA game by defeating the Maroons 24-16.
The Washington University Bears entered this season with hopes of attaining a University Athletic Association (UAA) conference title for the fourth year in a row. The Bears’ hope to continue a tradition of excellence, which includes an eleven-year streak of finishing the regular season with a winning record.
