As I walk to class each day, I always have to budget an extra five minutes into every trip in order to account for those random encounters with friends, classmates, and acquaintances that happen all too often.
As many of you may have noticed, the Student Government Association at Emory University has declared “war” on Washington University in an attempt to build up a rivalry with us. Such activities are both demeaning and classless. They show lack of judgment and, in my mind, a hint of envy. As an aside, it also seems a bit paradoxical to artificially create a rivalry.
With the much appreciated increased coverage of Student Union in Student Life this year, as well as of the recent discussion about Student Union’s ability to outreach and plan “fun” events, I would just like to take a moment to respond to a few comments as well as further explain all that Student Union does and wishes to do.
As we prepare for arguably the biggest event on our campus during our short four (or five) years here, we must not forget the larger implications of what we are participating in. It is more than an enormous publicity campaign for the University. It has become clich‚ to say that this is the chance of a lifetime, but it really is.
When I sat down to try to write this, I thought about what I could possibly say that would be meaningful to such a diverse group of readers. Perhaps I could tell you where the best place to eat on campus is; that’s always useful. But I got something to eat, and suddenly this idea lost its appeal.
