Like most students traveling abroad next semester, I am not only thinking about how to pack long silk underwear or extra contact lens solution but I am also worrying about other necessities-namely food.
Considering a large portion of our Study Abroad 101 subsection discussions focused on the fear of getting fat while abroad, I figured there was no better time to write about the successes of other eating styles.
Every year during the Great American Smokeout, the American Cancer Society encourages current smokers to give up smoking entirely, to quit “cold turkey.” Events range from cigarette exchange programs to awareness efforts, all planned to help convince smokers to drop their harmful habit.
A common complaint among college students is that they are hungry often and don’t know what to eat to fill themselves up. With our loads of extracurricular activities, intramural sports games, homework and studying it’s no wonder why we’re all hungry.
The question now is: what can we do to stop that hunger?
Although the process is not entirely understood, we are aware of several hormones and chemicals that play a role in determining when someone is “full,” all of which can be activated by eating the “right” foods at the “right” time.
It’s another late night at Olin and the words on the pages of your textbook are beginning to blur. While you reach for your venti vanilla latte, the guy studying next to you reaches for a bottle of pills. Vitamins? His asthma medication? No. It’s Adderall.
“Party like a rockstar, party like a rockstar…” declares a Shop Boyz song. Similarly, Nickleback’s song, “Rockstar” reflects this rockstar fixation with its lyrics, “We all just want to be big rockstars….” It’s true: our culture is obsessed with sports stars, movie stars, and of course, rockstars.

We all think, it’s just hooking up, right? Well, “just hooking up”-whether it’s limited to kissing or escalated to foreplay or intercourse-may result in the contraction of a sexually transmitted infection (STI), which means “just hooking up” is much riskier than it seems.
Doctors and nutritionists alike enforce the idea that getting enough vitamins and minerals is extremely important for optimal health. However, what they often don’t emphasize enough is the importance of getting these nutrients from actual food. When taken in pill format, the vitamins are usually less effective due to poor absorption rates in the body.
For years and years, people worldwide have tried to maintain or lower their weight by altering their diets. Americans seem to have an obsession with developing new tricks and tips that will ensure weight loss. Many of these methods, however, are not only ineffective, but actually counterproductive.
Recently, more people have started to increase their protein intake as a means of increasing overall muscle mass. Several students, including some of my closest friends, consume daily protein supplements either in the form of amino acid pills, whey protein powder or soy protein powder.
