Lady Bears split weekend games, McFarlin injured during play
Scott BresslerWashington University women’s basketball extended its winning streak to five games on Saturday with an 87-76 win over Dension University. In a close first half with many lead changes, the ninth ranked Lady Bears took more shots and took a five point lead into halftime, a lead that would hold for the remainder of the game.
Jaimie McFarlin, Shanna-Lei Dacanay and Zo‰ Unruh scored in double figures, with McFarlin leading the attack with 29 points in 32 minutes. Dacanay dropped 11, and Unruh dropped 16 in the win. Nine players scored in the game, and Wash. U. shot an incredible 50 percent from the field.
While the offense scored enough to win, Denison shot 56 percent from the floor and made 10 three-pointers. Had the Bears not outscored Denison from the foul line, The Big Red might have handed the Bears a loss.
Despite surrendering 76 points, Head Coach Nancy Fahey believed that the team played very well.
“We executed our offense and really took control in the second half,” said Fahey.
The Bear’s five game winning streak came to an end on Sunday with a 66-58 loss to Capital University. In a reversal of the previous afternoon, both teams shot under 43 percent from the floor, but Capital was 9-16 from three and outscored the Lady Bears from the free throw line.
Wash. U. took a five point lead into halftime, only to be outscored by 13 in the second half. Dacanay tied the game at 58 with 3:12 left on a three pointer, but Capital held Wash. U. scoreless for the remainder of the contest.
Dacanay was the only player to score in double figures for the Bears, and she finished the game with 12 points. Capital had two players in double figures, with Kristen Richardson and Caitlin Elsass scoring 32 of the Crusaders’ 66 points.
Fahey and the team were disappointed after letting an eight point lead with 10 minutes left slip away. When asked what Capital did to retake the lead, Fahey stated, “They started going inside more.” She added, “We had our opportunities. You can’t miss opportunities, including at the free throw line.”
Adding to the loss was the loss of McFarlin to an injury with around a minute left in regulation. McFarlin will be evaluated by a doctor during the upcoming week.
Wash. U. only has one game next week, another road game against McKendree University on Friday. The Lady Bears look to begin another winning streak before returning to St. Louis on the 11th for a road game at Fontbonne. After the Fontbonne game, the Bears will be home for the remainder for two non-conference game before the beginning of UAA play.
