Lady Bears face another tough weekend of conference play

Scott Bressler

This time, they at least face two different teams. After playing New York University and Brandeis University two weekends straight, 17th-ranked Washington University’s (15-5, 7-2 UAA) women’s basketball team returns home to face two new conference rivals. The Bears tip off against arch-rival Emory University (8-12, 2-7 UAA) today at 6 p.m. followed by a Sunday afternoon duel versus Case Western Reserve University (9-11, 1-8 UAA) at 2 p.m.

Coming off a lop-sided 83-58 loss to NYU and a hard fought 51-45 win against Brandeis, the Red and Green fell into a three-way tie for first place in the UAA with NYU and the University of Rochester. After last weekend, the team knows that they still have a lot to prove.

Despite the fact that their opponents are two of the numerically weaker teams in the conference, the Bears will still face tough competition this weekend. “Although Case and Emory may have more losses than other UAA teams, no one in this conference can ever be overlooked. The conference is just too tough to do so,” said sophomore Jill Brandt earlier this week. “Our challenges this week are mental more than physical.”

Post players Jaimie McFarlin and Rebecca Parker have put up very strong numbers this season, achieving nine and eight double-doubles on the season respectively. Senior Sarah Schell has also been putting up big numbers the past few weeks and is only 29 assists away from breaking the UAA mark. Brandt and senior Jenny Southworth round out the rest of the Bears’ strong starting line-up.

Sophomore Halsey Ward, usually the first player off the bench, has been playing particularly solidly recently, scoring a career-high 12 points against NYU last weekend. Freshman Janice Edwards has put up a solid defensive effort from the bench.

The Bears feel confident heading into this weekend’s games. “[Head Coach Nancy Fahey emphasizes that there is no point in losing if you are not going to learn from it and get better,” said Brandt. We are focusing on bouncing back this weekend.”
