The Washington University men’s basketball team continued its impressive run with wins over Case Western University and Emory University. The Bears have now won five games in a row. Their last loss came to then no. one Rochester.

Junior Rob Keller led the Bears in their 89-82 victory over Case Western with a career-high tying 24 points. Keller shot a blistering 9-14 from the field while making 6-10 three-point attempts. Keller connected on his first five shots of the game to help put the Bears ahead 19-11 with 14:32 remaining in the first half. Following Keller’s early scoring, the Bears went on a 15-2 run to take a 46-27 lead. The run was capped by back to back three-pointers by sophomore Scott Stone and freshman Brandon York. The Bears took a 54-40 halftime lead; the 54 points represented the team’s second highest point total for a half this season. While Case Western cut the lead to six with the score 61-55 in the second half, the Bears responded with an 8-0 run with Keller and Stone draining threes and junior Anthony Hollins connecting on an alley-oop dunk. Stone finished the game with 20 points and seven assists. Senior Ryan DeBoer contributed a double-double to the winning effort with 12 points and 10 boards. Hollins came close to a double-double with 10 points and nine rebounds. The win was the University’s 18th straight over Case Western.

The team followed up their win by heading to Atlanta to take on Emory. Senior Barry Bryant led the team against Emory with 19 points as the Bears defeated Emory 86-68. In addition to Bryant, four other Bears scored in double figures for the game. Hollins had 12 points while also adding 10 rebounds for a double-double. Stone had 15 points on 5-7 shooting. Stone connected on five of his six three-point attempts. York also chipped in with a career high 14 points. Sophomore Mike Grunst added 10 rebounds and four blocks in just 21 minutes of play. Keying the Bears attack during the game was their three-point shooting accuracy. They made 10-20 three-pointers during the game. In addition to their three-point marksmanship, the Bears made sure they controlled the game on the defensive end and through their rebounding. The Bears defense limited Emory to just 32. 4 percent shooting. The Bears out-rebounded Emory 52-42.

With their two wins over the weekend, the Bears improved their record to 17-5 and 9-2 in University Athletic Association (UAA) play. The Bears remained in second place behind Rochester University in the UAA. The Bears will return home for their last two home games of the season next weekend. They will play Brandeis University on Friday at 8 p.m. and New York University at 1 p.m. on Sunday.
