Bears teams look to avenge losses
Bernell DorroughThe Washington University men’s and women’s basketball teams will return home this weekend to take on conference rivals Carnegie Mellon University (CMU) and Rochester University. Both University teams had played their last four games on the road. The Bears had faced off against CMU and Rochester last weekend with both teams earning a split by defeating CMU and losing to Rochester. Rochester’s men’s team is currently ranked number one in the nation while the women’s team is number four.
Last weekend’s action led to a shake up in the UAA rankings on the women’s side, with the Bears and Case Western falling from the top spot, leaving Rochester all alone atop the conference. The Bears are now part of a three way tie for second with Brandeis and New York, and Case Western is now in fifth place. This weekend’s games will determine whether the Bears can regain their top position
The men have a lifetime record of 22-13 against the Yellow Jackets, but the University will have a tough game ahead of them on Sunday, facing the only unbeaten team in Division III men’s basketball. The Bears 22-3 lifetime record against Carnegie Mellon University includes 13 straight wins including last weekend’s victory.
The Bears’ women’s team will kick off the action today at 6 p.m. against CMU. They will be followed by the men’s team, also playing CMU, at 8 p.m. A special ceremony to honor the University’s Division III champion volleyball team will be held at half time of the men’s game.
On Sunday, both the men and women’s squads will look to return the favor to Rochester, who beat both teams last weekend. The men’s team will play at 12 p.m. and the women’s team at 2 p.m.
The games should be important for both teams as both CMU and Rochester represent conference opponents. The women’s team is currently 15-3 overall on the season and 5-2 in University Athletic Association (UAA) play. The team’s excellent play has not gone unnoticed. They are currently ranked number ten by D3Hoops.com and are number 11 in the USA Today/ESPN/Women’s Basketball College Association Division III Poll. The men’s team is 13-5 overall and is also 5-2 in UAA play.
