Bears sweep UAA road trip

Bernell Dorrough

The Washington University men’s basketball team continued its strong play over the weekend in road victories over New York University (NYU) and Brandeis University. With the wins, the Bears improved their season record to 12-4.

While the Bears trailed by three at the half against NYU, they were propelled by a 9-0 run at the start of the second half to win the game 94-83. Leading the way for the Bears was senior Barry Bryant who scored 12 points in the second half of play. Bryant finished with 17 points overall while also dishing out 10 assists to earn a double-double. Bryant’s efforts were aided by two other Bears who enjoyed career days. Sophomore Scott Stone and junior Anthony Hollins both set career highs in scoring with 22 and 19 points respectively. Ten of Stone’s points came on his perfect 10-10 free-throw shooting. Hollins also posted a team high in rebounds with 9 and blocks with 3. The play of senior Ryan DeBoer was also of note. DeBoer played through a broken nose for much of the second half and still was able to contribute with 13 points for the game.

Though both teams shot almost 50% for the game, the Bears enjoyed an enormous advantage at the free-throw line. The Bears made 24-33 free throws while NYU only attempted 14 free throws total.

Following their win over NYU, the Bears headed to Auerbach Arena to take on Brandeis. The Bears did not let down in their second game of the weekend as they scored a victory over Brandeis 80-71. The win improved their University Athletic Association record to 4-1.

While the game was closely fought for much of the contest, the Bears opened up a 70-59 lead with 7:40 remaining in the second half and never looked back. Bryant led the team in scoring with 15 points. He also tied for the team high in rebounds with 7 caroms. Hollins was second on the team in scoring with 13 while Stone added 11. Stone led the team in assists with 5 while DeBoer totaled 3 blocks.

Keying both victories over the weekend was the Bears’ hot shooting. The team shot 50.4% from the field over the course of the two games. The Bears’ fiery shooting extended to the three point lines as well as the team shot a remarkable 45% from three point range making 11 of the 25 three pointers they attempted.

The Bears will return to action next weekend as they take on the University of Rochester and Carnegie Mellon University on the road.
